How to Raise Mules

Many of us may never have seen a mule, but we are quite familiar with it. It is a hybrid of a horse and a donkey. Mules are relatively large in size and fairly simple to raise. Because mules are more hardworking and durable than both horses and donkeys, their economic benefits once exceeded those of raising horses and donkeys. So do you know how to raise mules? Is there any difference from raising horses and donkeys? Let's take a look below.

1. Mule Shed Construction

If we are going to raise mules, we also need to build a breeding facility, but generally the mule breeding facility will not be very large, because the annual output of mules is not high. The construction of a mule shed is actually similar to that of a donkey shed or horse shed. Of course, if the goal is to reduce breeding costs, then current greenhouse technology can be used for breeding. Dedicated feeding troughs and water troughs should be built in the breeding shed, and pens should be divided at the same time. Generally, it is best to raise one to two mules per pen. Finally, a separate threshold should be set up at the mule shed to prevent the mules from escaping.

2. Purchasing Mules

Because mules are already relatively few, purchasing mules is also very simple for us. If there is a dedicated breeding base, then go to the breeding base for bulk purchasing. Moreover, the reproductive capacity of mules is very weak, and it can even be said that they have no reproductive capacity. After each sale, they need to be purchased again in batches, which is also the reason why many people are unwilling to raise mules now. Secondly, a small amount can also be purchased in scattered buys, but we should choose those with a relatively large body size, strong limbs, and a gentle temperament. Those with dull eyes or weak limbs can be directly rejected.

3. Feeding Management

Mules are a hybrid product of donkeys and horses, and both donkeys and horses are forage animals, so mules also feed on forage. If there are conditions for planting, grass can be grown to raise mules, which makes the cost of mule breeding lower and also guarantees the quality of the feed. Of course, if the goal is to promote the rapid growth of mules and speed up their economic benefits, then we can also appropriately carry out supplementary feeding. For example, reasonably feed some concentrate, such as cornmeal, bran, sweet potato, rice bran, broken rice, and so on. These are all excellent feeds.

4. Daily Management

During the mule breeding process, we should carry out sanitation cleaning in a timely manner. Generally, it should be cleaned at least once a week, and at the same time the mule shed should be disinfected irregularly. Secondly, in summer, heat prevention measures should be taken well to prevent mules from suffering heatstroke and affecting their normal growth. In late autumn and early winter, the mule shed should also be checked, and leaks from wind and rain should be repaired to maintain the temperature of the mule shed. Of course, we can also achieve the effect of heat preservation by adding warm bedding material in the mule shed. Finally, disease prevention measures should be taken well, and vaccines should be injected reasonably according to the procedures of breeding technology.

Mules are generally raised in an extensive manner, so the requirements for the breeding environment, technology, and other aspects are not high. Even so, there are still places we need to pay attention to, so it is still necessary to understand the growth habits of mules and master professional knowledge to maximize the economic benefits of mules.
