What conditions are needed for sturgeon farming? A must-read for farmers

Sturgeon farming conditions

Sturgeon is one of the earliest vertebrate fish among the fish species that exist today. Many friends think that sturgeon is the Chinese sturgeon, but that is actually wrong. The Chinese sturgeon is a key protected animal in China, so it cannot be eaten. Therefore, the sturgeon we eat now are all edible varieties, and the sturgeon farming area in China is now relatively wide, but farming sturgeon requires certain farming conditions. So today I have brought you the sturgeon farming conditions, let's take a look below!

1. Water temperature

Sturgeon does not have high requirements for water temperature and can adapt to various water temperatures relatively quickly. It can withstand a minimum water temperature of 0 degrees, and a maximum of no more than 35 degrees is fine. However, when farmed artificially, the most suitable water temperature is around 20 degrees, and during the production period and incubation period, the water temperature should be controlled at around 19 degrees. When the temperature is relatively low in winter, the sturgeon's appetite decreases or it even stops feeding, so the water temperature should be controlled at around 15 degrees to ensure the sturgeon feeds normally.

2. Dissolved oxygen

Sturgeon has very high requirements for dissolved oxygen. During farming, if the dissolved oxygen content in the water is unstable, it is not suitable for farming sturgeon. During farming, the dissolved oxygen content in the water should be controlled above 5 mg. If it is lower than this value, then the sturgeon's appetite will decrease. If it is lower than 3 mg, the sturgeon stops feeding and shows symptoms of oxygen deficiency, causing the sturgeon to move slowly, become comatose, or even die.

3. pH

The pH of the farming water is also very important for the growth of sturgeon. Sturgeon cannot grow in acidic water. We should control the pH value of the water at around 7.5. Slightly alkaline water is more suitable for the growth of sturgeon. If it is acidic, the carbon dioxide content in the water will increase greatly, causing the dissolved oxygen content to drop sharply. This will seriously affect the growth of sturgeon, and will also increase gases such as ammonia nitrogen, causing stunted development or even death of sturgeon.

4. Light

Sturgeon's need for light varies with changes in its lifestyle. When swimming vertically, sturgeon has a certain fear of light. However, as the sturgeon gradually enters the benthic stage, this will gradually disappear. Usually, light will not affect the growth and development of sturgeon. But in high-temperature summer conditions, direct sunlight on the water surface will raise the water temperature and affect the growth of sturgeon. Therefore, we should reasonably build shade sheds over the farming pond.

5. Transparency

During farming, in order to ensure the healthy growth of sturgeon, during the cultivation process we should ensure that the farming pond has a transparency of at least about 50 cm. Clean up sturgeon feces and leftover bait in time to avoid reducing water transparency, control the amount of plankton and other substances, and ensure water quality. When the sturgeon gradually reaches adulthood, the transparency can be lowered to about 30 cm. Only in this way can the growth of the sturgeon be observed, so that problems can be dealt with in time when they occur.

The above is a brief introduction to sturgeon farming conditions. In fact, there are also ammonia nitrogen gas, water flow speed, and so on, all of which need to be managed well during the farming process. They are also the main factors affecting the growth of sturgeon, so everyone must pay attention to these aspects when farming to avoid unnecessary losses. That is all for today's introduction.
