What are the common farming models for yellow catfish?
Yellow catfish, also called yellow bone fish, is an omnivorous fish that mainly feeds on small benthic animals, small fish, small shrimp, small aquatic insects, as well as some invertebrates and plankton. Yellow catfish is a warm-water fish with strong adaptability to the environment, and it is currently mainly produced in the Yangtze River, Yellow River, Pearl River, and some river basins in Heilongjiang and Liaoning in China. So what are the common farming models for yellow catfish now? Let's take a look.

1. Pond-based main culture of yellow catfish
Pond-based main culture of yellow catfish is the most traditional farming model and also the most commonly used fish-farming model in our daily lives. For pond-based main culture of yellow catfish, the water depth is generally more than 1.5 m, the mud at the bottom of the pond should not be too thick, and quicklime should be used for disinfection before stocking. The stocking size of yellow catfish is about 10 to 15 cm. About 3,000 to 4,500 yellow catfish are stocked per mu, along with an appropriate number of bighead carp, bass, silver carp, etc., to regulate water quality, so the farming returns will also be higher.
2. Polyculture of yellow catfish and soft-shelled turtles
The polyculture technique of yellow catfish and soft-shelled turtles actually uses the pond-based main culture technique, and during the farming process, soft-shelled turtles that can grow together with yellow catfish are added to the pond for farming. We generally use Chinese soft-shelled turtles for polyculture with yellow catfish. Usually when the water temperature is about 20°C, the Chinese soft-shelled turtles are put in, about 200 Chinese soft-shelled turtles, while the number of river crabs is about 600 to 800. Yellow catfish need to be fed twice a day, and high-protein feed for Chinese soft-shelled turtles also needs to be fed. This makes full use of the water body and greatly improves economic benefits.
3. Polyculture of yellow catfish and crabs
The polyculture model of yellow catfish and crabs also has very good economic benefits at present. When we carry out polyculture of fish and crabs, we generally use river crabs for polyculture with yellow catfish. River crabs are generally stocked in April each year, at about 600 to 800 river crabs per mu with a size of about 30 to 40 g. During the farming process, about 50 silver carp also need to be stocked. When feeding, the feed for river crabs is mainly used, and an appropriate amount of yellow catfish feed can be fed. This can reduce farming risks and lower farming costs.
4. Rice-field polyculture of yellow catfish
Rice-field polyculture technology is actually a very practical ecological farming model at present. Aquatic products such as fish, shrimp, crabs, rice-field eels, and loaches can all adopt the rice-field polyculture model. The rice-field polyculture of yellow catfish is the same, but the size is generally best at about 8 to 10 cm. About 2,000 to 3,000 yellow catfish can be stocked per mu, and rice can also be harvested, but attention should be paid to the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and try not to use pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
5. Polyculture of yellow catfish and shrimp
The polyculture technique of yellow catfish and shrimp is currently very profitable, because the market price of shrimp is also relatively high now. Generally, the polyculture of yellow catfish and shrimp uses freshwater shrimp or Pacific white shrimp. Before farming, the pond must be thoroughly disinfected, and then yellow catfish are stocked at a size of about 2 to 3 cm, with 3,000 fish per mu. The number of freshwater shrimp and Pacific white shrimp stocked is about 60,000 at about 1 cm. When feeding, note that shrimp feed should be fed first, and then yellow catfish feed.
The above are the most common farming models for yellow catfish at present. Among them, there is also a relatively common farming model, which is cage culture.
