Feeding and Management of Raccoon Dogs

The raccoon dog is currently a special breeding project with relatively fast development in China, and the economic value of raising raccoon dogs is relatively high. Raccoon dogs have a very wide range of uses: their fur can be made into fur products and toothbrushes, and their meat can also be eaten. However, although raising raccoon dogs is relatively simple, everyone still needs to do a good job in feeding and management. Raccoon dogs have different feeding and management methods at each growth stage. Below, the editor brings you the management methods for each growth stage of raccoon dogs. Let's take a look together!

1. Mating period

The management of raccoon dogs during the mating period is relatively important. In the early mating period, ensure that each raccoon dog eats its fill, and meat-based feed should account for about 12% of the total daily ration. Appropriately add fat-type feed to the feed, and feed about three times in October-November. We should also appropriately adjust the feed according to the growth condition of the raccoon dogs, supplement vitamins, avoid a single feed type, feed more complete-formula feed, and ensure the feed is palatable. During the mating period, attention should be paid to cold prevention and warmth preservation, hygiene management should be strengthened, and sufficient drinking water should be ensured in the enclosure so that the raccoon dogs can drink at any time.

2. Gestation period

After the female raccoon dog is successfully mated and fertilized, we should promote embryo development and increase the proportion of complete-formula feed and the palatability of the feed. Ensure the feed is fresh, do not feed spoiled or moldy feed, and increase feed such as protein and vitamins. The feed should be properly diluted. In the early gestation period, feeding should be no less than twice a day, and as time goes on, one more feed feeding per day should be added. During the gestation period, the breeding farm must be kept quiet enough to prevent the raccoon dogs from being startled and miscarrying. Frequently observe the raccoon dogs' eating, feces, and activity conditions, appropriately adjust the feed, and strengthen drinking water.

3. Lactation period

Management during the lactation period is the key to ensuring the healthy growth of young raccoon dogs. In order to promote lactation in female raccoon dogs, we should add an appropriate amount of milk-type feed to the feed. Not only should the proportion of protein, vitamins, and carbohydrates be increased, but the feed should also be fine enough. Appropriately feed porridge-type feed. Do not restrict the raccoon dogs' eating; they should be allowed to eat freely until they stop eating. After the raccoon dogs stop eating, residual feed should be removed in time to prevent the feed from spoiling and being accidentally eaten by the raccoon dogs. When the young raccoon dogs begin to eat feed or when the female raccoon dog's breast milk is insufficient, artificial supplementary feeding should be carried out. Grind meat-based feed, then add grains, vitamin C, and other substances to make milk-based feed for supplementary feeding.

4. Recovery period

After a male raccoon dog successfully mates, it will enter a period of weakness, which is also the time when the male raccoon dog's reproductive organs develop again. We should reasonably allocate feed according to the different growth conditions of the raccoon dogs, for example, after young raccoon dogs are weaned and separated into pens, within 3 weeks after male raccoon dogs mate, and within three weeks after female raccoon dogs are weaned. Feeding should follow the feed used during the mating period and lactation period. After gradual recovery, feed normal feed. During this stage, the proportion of meat-based feed must not be less than 10%. After the beginning of autumn, the proportion of protein feed should be appropriately increased to promote the growth of raccoon dogs, strengthen resistance, and improve the economic benefits of breeding.

The above is a brief introduction to the feeding and management methods of raccoon dogs. The feeding and management of raccoon dogs is relatively troublesome, especially the selection of feed. Also, after young raccoon dogs are weaned, attention should be paid to adjusting the feed. Feed should be allocated well according to different growth times, and the feeding amount and feeding frequency should be well controlled to ensure the normal growth of young raccoon dogs. These are all basic tasks that everyone needs to do well in the breeding process, so everyone must do these preparatory tasks well before breeding.
