What breeds of crucian carp are there

The crucian carp is the most common freshwater fish in our lives. It is a schooling, omnivorous fish with tender meat and high nutritional value, and it is one of the important food fish in our country. But besides the crucian carp we eat, after many years of artificial breeding and selection, it has many breeds; for example, the common goldfish is a kind of ornamental fish that arose from it. So what other breeds of crucian carp are there? Let's take a look.

1. Native crucian carp

The native crucian carp is the genuine wild crucian carp. Its scales are golden yellow, and its biggest feature is that, counted from the lateral line, it has a total of 28 scales. The native crucian carp is relatively common in the north, with a golden body all over. Because it is small in size and grows slowly, generally around half a jin, and anything over one jin is rather rare, very few people farm it, and it is relatively rare on the market. It is precisely for this reason that its price is relatively high, but its taste is also the best among crucian carp.

2. Engineering crucian carp

The engineering crucian carp, also known as the Xiangyun crucian carp, did not originally exist in nature; it is a breed developed through artificial breeding, produced by crossing crucian carp and common carp. It has no reproductive capacity and can only be bred artificially. Its characteristic is extremely fast growth; it can easily grow past one jin, and its growth rate is 3-4 times that of the native crucian carp, but its meat is not as good as that of the native crucian carp.

3. High-back crucian carp

The high-back crucian carp is the largest among crucian carp. It is not an artificially bred breed, but even the engineering crucian carp cannot match its size; it is the big brother among crucian carp. Its appearance is just like its name: its back is very high, somewhat like a bream, making it extremely easy to identify.

4. White crucian carp

The white crucian carp is native to Japan and is also a breed improved through artificial selection. It is not small either and can easily grow past one jin. It also has the advantages of fast growth, not being picky about food, and few diseases, which makes it popular with farmers. It is also currently the main breed on the market; the silvery-white crucian carp we buy in the market is mostly this one.

5. Reed-flower crucian carp

The reed-flower crucian carp, also known as the Pengze crucian carp, is also an artificially bred crucian carp breed. Its back is light black and also has some markings, with a bit of silvery white on the belly area. Overall it looks dull gray. It prefers to stay among reeds, and its back has black markings like reed flowers, so it is called the reed-flower crucian carp. Its growth rate is average, but faster than that of the native crucian carp.
