How to prevent and treat impacted crop disease, which young rabbits are prone to after eating

   Impacted crop disease in domestic rabbits is one of the common diseases, commonly known as “bloat”. It occurs mostly in rabbits aged 2-6 months, usually 2-4 hours after eating. In the early stage of the disease, appetite is completely lost, the gastrointestinal tract becomes bloated with gas, the abdomen swells, and tapping produces a drum-like sound; the rabbit drools and lies prone and restless. Constipation occurs, and the droppings have an abnormal odor. In the later stage, the rabbit gasps heavily, has difficulty breathing, and makes pitiful squealing cries. If not treated in time, severely affected rabbits will die when the gastrointestinal tract ruptures from the gas.

    1. Prevention:

    1. Feed rabbits an appropriate amount of concentrate, avoid overeating cold and raw feed; cake-type feed should be crushed and soaked thoroughly in warm water to prevent it from swelling after entering the stomach.

    2. When free-ranging or feeding, avoid dew-covered grass, frost-covered grass, and moldy feed.

    3. Feed at fixed times and in fixed amounts, and beware of sudden overeating after hunger; feed changes should be gradual, not abrupt, so as to prevent rabbits from overeating or refusing to eat.

    4. In winter, pay attention to keeping the rabbit hutch warm, do not feed rabbits low-temperature feed, and a small amount of food that can improve cold resistance, such as chopped garlic, chili powder, and minced ginger, can be added to the feed; ice and snow in the exercise area should be cleared promptly.

    5. Keep the rabbit hutch sanitary and prevent feed contamination and rabbits eating unclean soft feces.

    In the initial onset, stop the fermentation and gas production of the rabbit's stomach contents. ① Administer about 5 drops of Shidishui orally, with 1 tablespoon of warm boiled water. ② Soak the mashed substance made from 2 heads of garlic in 150 ml of vinegar for half an hour, then take the vinegar-garlic liquid and administer it orally, 20 ml each time. ③ Grind 1-2 tablets of Dahuang Soda into fine powder and administer orally with warm boiled water. ④ Grind 1 tablet of dry yeast into fine powder and administer orally with warm boiled water. ⑤ Administer 25 mg of dimethyl silicone oil orally to the rabbit, and it can be cured in one dose.

    In the middle stage of impacted crop, make the sick rabbit expel stomach gas. ① Mash radish and take the juice, then administer 2 tablespoons orally. ② Grind Sichuan pepper seeds (shelled) into fine powder and administer orally with warm water.

    In the late stage of impacted crop, manually release the stomach gas. Use a syringe to slowly withdraw gas from the rabbit's intestinal tract.
