How to prevent and treat goat pregnancy toxemia when a ewe carrying multiple fetuses has poor fetal qi flow before giving birth

Pregnancy toxemia refers to symptoms such as swelling under the belly and in the hind limbs that appear in pregnant ewes about 15 days before giving birth. Goat pregnancy toxemia is mostly caused by disharmony of qi and blood affecting the smooth flow of fetal qi.

Goat

    1. Causes: During pregnancy, goats are affected by wind-cold externally and injured by cold internally, with improper feeding and little exercise, so that the pregnant ewe suffers depletion of primordial qi, disharmony of qi and blood, clear qi failing to rise, and turbid qi failing to descend, causing discomfort to the fetus and leading to the illness.

    2. Symptoms: In the early stage, spirit and appetite show no obvious changes, with swelling under the belly, including the udder, perineum, and limbs, slow movement, sometimes abdominal distension, and slight panting. In mild cases, the swelling often disappears on its own within a few days after the ewe gives birth. In severe cases, the female goat sometimes shows listlessness, dry and scorched hair, reduced appetite, stiff and restricted gait, and may even lie down and be unable to stand. Generally, the goat's pulse shows little change, the mouth color is pale white, and the oral fluids are smooth and slippery.

    3. Treatment: Place the pregnant ewe suffering from pregnancy toxemia in a warm, comfortable sheep shed bedded with a layer of soft dry straw, and clean it regularly. Every day, lead the goat out of the shed for slow walking for 3-4 hours, increase feeding of feed rich in protein and vitamins, and do not let it drink cold water. Use Angelica sinensis 12 grams, prepared rehmannia 12 grams, white peony root 10 grams, Ligusticum chuanxiong 8 grams, bitter orange 6 grams, green tangerine peel 5 grams, and safflower 3 grams, grind together into a fine powder, mix with boiling water, wait until warm, and administer by drenching, 1 dose/day, for 5 consecutive doses.
