With so many transmission vectors for red eye disease in summer, how do you prevent and treat red eye disease in domestic rabbits

Infectious conjunctivitis, commonly known as red eye tearing disease, is one of the more common eye diseases in domestic rabbits. It mostly occurs in summer, and young rabbits and adult rabbits are frequently affected. It spreads quickly and has a high incidence rate. The main transmission vectors of red eye disease in domestic rabbits are mosquitoes, flies and certain moths.

    Main symptoms:

The conjunctiva is red and swollen, with tearing, and purulent discharge at the corners of the eyes. The domestic rabbit's eyes become stuck and difficult to open, or the eyes are half-closed. Sometimes there is fever, reduced appetite, listlessness, dry feces and yellow urine. In severe cases, the rabbit avoids light and the eyes swell. In severely affected domestic rabbits, secondary corneal ulceration occurs, causing blindness.

When a domestic rabbit has red eye disease, the rabbit should be isolated immediately in a dry, dark rabbit hutch for treatment, and environmental disinfection and mosquito and fly control should be carried out well.

    Treatment measures:

First rinse the affected eye of the domestic rabbit clean with mild saline solution, then apply gentamicin, penicillin or tetracycline ointment, 1 to 2 times a day.

Atropine ointment can also be applied to the affected area of the domestic rabbit, 1 to 2 times a day.

Inject 2 milligrams of tetracycline intramuscularly per kilogram of body weight, once every two days.

Use 5 grams each of honeysuckle, wild chrysanthemum, Qingxiangzi (Semen Celosiae) and Caojueming (Semen Cassiae), decoct them in water and feed the liquid to the rabbit, and also use this medicinal liquid to wash the eyes.

In summer, red eye disease in domestic rabbits mostly occurs as a local epidemic. After diseased rabbits are found, the rabbit hutch should be disinfected with some commonly used disinfectants.
