Scientific Deworming Methods and Technical Points for Pig Farms

How Pig Farms Carry Out Deworming

In recent years, the pig farming industry has developed very rapidly. In the process of raising pigs, we all know that pigs need to be dewormed. During the rearing process, pigs will more or less harbor parasites in their bodies, which affects their growth and reproduction. Especially during the fattening stage, pigs with more internal parasites cannot be fattened no matter how they are fed. So deworming pigs is a fairly big issue. How then should pig farms deworm their pigs? Let us learn about it together below.

1. Deworming time

Pig farms generally deworm pigs in two situations. The first is the two most basic dewormings of the year, which take place in March and April each spring, and between October and December each autumn and winter. These two are large-scale and comprehensive dewormings. The second is stage-specific deworming, which in plain terms means carrying out specific deworming at a particular stage, generally referring to half a month before a sow farrows, the nursery piglet period, and half a month before reserve breeding pigs enter the breeding herd. In addition, breeding boars need to be dewormed at least three to four times a year to ensure the quality of the breeding boars.

2. Selection of deworming drugs

Whether the deworming drug is chosen correctly is a fairly key point for successful deworming. There are currently many kinds of deworming drugs for pigs on the market, so how should we choose a deworming drug? Generally, we choose broad-spectrum deworming drugs that can be used for various pigs, can expel various parasites, and are highly effective. Deworming drugs like avermectin are only highly effective against parasites such as sarcoptic mange mites, but have little effect on roundworms and whipworms, so we generally do not consider this kind of deworming drug now. But compound deworming drugs like fenbendazole and albendazole are much better in effect.

3. Deworming methods

There are mainly two deworming methods, namely the subcutaneous injection method and the feed-mixing feeding deworming method. The most direct one is the subcutaneous injection method, which makes the deworming effect relatively fast and efficient. However, when giving subcutaneous injections, what should be noted is the disinfection treatment before and after injection. Next, when injecting, choose a site where the skin is relatively thin, the subcutaneous tissue is loose, and there are relatively few blood vessels, such as the neck. The feed-mixing feeding deworming method is a more indirect way, and at the same time such a phenomenon will also appear: they will not eat feed with deworming drugs added. So what we need to do is add a small amount of sugar to the feed, which can stimulate their appetite.

4. Precautions

There are many places that need attention when deworming pigs. For example, piglets must be two months old before their first deworming. Also, after deworming, pigs should be given more vitamins, which can increase their growth rate. Next, during the deworming process, do not feed other drugs, so as to avoid conflicts between drugs and causing poisoning. Finally, after deworming, the manure and worm bodies in the pig pen should be promptly collected and treated together, so as to prevent the worms that have just been expelled from reinfecting the pigs.

The above is all the content that the editor wants to share with you today. In fact, there are still many places that need our attention when deworming pigs.
