What are the breeding methods for ewes? A must-read for sheep farmers

Ewe breeding methods

Breeding ewes has always been a task that farmers need to pay close attention to, and each breeding period is always a fairly strenuous stretch of time. There are currently three mainstream breeding methods. Each of the three has its own advantages. Let's take a look at these three breeding methods together below, so you can learn about them and have one more option ready.

1. Natural mating

This is a method that has been passed down since the beginning of pen feeding, and so far it is more suitable for small-scale farms. The process is also very simple: during the ewe's estrus season, keep rams and ewes together and let them mate naturally to achieve the effect of breeding. However, due to today's feed issues, the estrus periods of the two often deviate, and during mating the ram often injures the ewe because the ewe does not cooperate. So when using this method, everyone should try as much as possible to pair rams and ewes that have the same estrus period.

2. Artificial insemination

This was developed in response to the imperfections of the above breeding situation and came about with advances in technology. Semen is collected from the ram through instruments, and after scientific screening, high-quality sperm is selected and transplanted into the ewe's body to complete breeding. The advantage is that it can maximize the use of resources. However, it has certain technical requirements. This is more suitable for large-scale farms, and especially when there are few rams, this method can be given priority.

3. Manual assisted mating

Manual assisted mating can be regarded as a supplement to natural mating, because many situations arise during natural mating, such as the two having different estrus times and one of them being unwilling to mate. One of them has a shorter estrus period, leading to problems such as breeding failure. This method uses drugs for manual assistance during breeding to extend the mating duration and achieve a high success rate. What is commonly used is estrus-inducing agents, allowing the two to mate multiple times. Generally, small and medium-sized farmers can consider this method; the workload is smaller and easier to arrange.

The above are the three methods of breeding ewes. Everyone can choose according to their own needs, or use a combination to achieve better results. Everyone should note that during breeding, the ram sometimes attacks the ewe, so this aspect must be checked thoroughly to avoid unnecessary losses.
