What should be noted during the eel farming process?

Precautions for eel farming

The eel is a special fish that lives in seawater, and there is great market demand for it, but at present the artificial farming technology for eels is not yet perfected, so the scale of eel farming and eel production have never shown obvious changes. So what issues do we need to pay attention to in the current eel farming process? Let's take a look together with the editor below.

1. Seed selection

Because the price of eels is also relatively expensive, when selecting fry you must be especially careful, and try to fundamentally reduce the cost of farming. High-quality fry are the basic condition for successful farming. Generally we choose eel fry that are relatively uniform in size, relatively plump, relatively smooth on the body surface, dark blue on the back and white on the belly, free from disease or injury, relatively active with a relatively large food intake, and relatively robust for farming. In this way, the survival rate of farming can be greatly guaranteed.

2. Water quality

Eel farming has very high requirements for water quality, so water quality management is a point that requires great attention during the farming process. Usually we choose to farm in cages near the sea mouth, where the water temperature should be maintained between 8°C and 30°C, the speed of the sea current must not be too fast, the specific gravity of the seawater should be around 1.01 to 1.02, and at the same time an appropriate amount of oxygen enhancer is added, or chemical products are used to adjust the water quality.

3. Density

The density of eel farming is also a point we need to pay attention to, because different eel varieties require different stocking densities, and at the same time the stocking density is also related to the size of the eels. Generally, 150 juvenile eels can be stocked per square meter, while for black fry eels it is generally around 500 per square meter. Next, after a period of rearing, we also need to carry out box-sorting management according to the growth condition and strength condition of the eels, which is beneficial to the growth and reproduction of the eels.

4. Disinfection

Disinfection in eel farming mainly has three aspects. First, before stocking the eels we need to disinfect the eel fry. Second, before and after stocking we need to disinfect the farming site. Finally, we also need to replace the cages irregularly and disinfect the cages, so as to ensure the healthy growth of the eels.

5. Feeding

When feeding, what we need to pay attention to is feeding at fixed times. Generally, feeding needs to be carried out twice a day, because the eel is a creature that likes darkness and fears light, so the feeding times are respectively around 5 a.m. and around 8 p.m. each day. Because winter is relatively cold and the water temperature is also relatively low, the eel's food intake will be relatively small, so generally it only needs to be fed once around 8 p.m. each day. Next, what we need to pay attention to is feeding at a fixed place, otherwise the eels cannot find it, then we must ensure the quality of the feed, and finally the amount of feed for rearing must also be fixed, mainly determined according to the type and size of the eels.

6. Management

What management needs to pay attention to is that the water quality of the farming area needs to be tested every day. Next, we must always pay attention to changes in weather, water temperature, and so on, and it is best to keep records. When signs of change are found, preventive preparations should be made in time. Then we observe the eels' food intake and growth condition, and if any difference from usual is found, it must be handled promptly. Finally, we must make preparations for disease and pest prevention, and at the same time an appropriate amount of antibiotics can be mixed into the bait to strengthen the eels' physique, thereby achieving disease and pest resistance.
