Clam Farming Methods

Clams are a fairly popular delicacy nowadays, and the most notable among them are the happy clams in barbecue and the current clam vermicelli, which also come in various flavors and taste really great. In the past, many people never imagined that clams could be artificially farmed, because clams have relatively strict farming requirements. Today let us learn about clam farming methods together.

1. Farming Preparation

Since clams have relatively strict living requirements, preparations must be thorough before farming so that clam farming can succeed. The preparatory work mainly includes two aspects. The first is the choice of farming site. Since clams cannot endure long-distance transport, a place with convenient transportation should be chosen. Next, the water quality of the farming site should be relatively clean and free of pollution, and dikes should be built around it for flood control. Before releasing the seedlings, the water in the pond should be drained for disinfection. The second preparation is selecting clam seedlings; try to choose healthy seedlings with uniform color, moderate size, and no damage.

2. Scientific Seeding

When seeding, note that different seedlings are stocked at different times. White seedlings are generally stocked in April and May, while seed seedlings are seeded around December or in the spring of the following year, and large seedlings need to be seeded before spawning, still in September. We can adopt two methods respectively: dry seeding and wet seeding. Dry seeding is suitable for white seedlings, and wet seeding is suitable for large seedlings. Do not mix them up, otherwise the losses will be relatively large.

3. Density Management

When seeding, we should pay attention to the density of clams, because the density directly affects the growth speed and yield of clams. First, we need to decide based on factors such as the size and strength of the clams. Second, we should analyze according to the tidal conditions of the stocking area. In places with more tides, seed as little as possible and seed large seedlings, while on flat mud areas more can be seeded.

4. Feeding Management

During the clam farming process, we should group and raise the clams according to how large they have grown, so as to ensure the yield and quality of the clams. Next, we should strengthen temperature management in the farming area to improve the survival rate of the clams. In ordinary feeding management, there is basically no need to worry too much; it is enough to regularly add feed to the farming site to enhance the nutrients and plankton in the water and thereby promote the growth of the clams.

5. Daily Management

After the clams are seeded, we should strengthen inspection of the farming area to check whether the clams have escaped, and at the same time make preparations to prevent clam predators. Next, the dikes should be repaired for disaster prevention. Also, after clams reproduce they are relatively fragile, so we should strengthen supervision and transplanting of them to avoid unnecessary damage.
