How to raise yellow catfish? A detailed explanation of the key farming techniques

Key points for yellow catfish farming

The yellow catfish is an omnivorous fish, a common species found near the Pacific basin, and is currently a fairly popular fish farming project. Although it is an omnivore, it mainly feeds on meat. Because of its high nutritional value, tender meat and good taste, it is farmed in many places, but the annual output is not very high. So today I have a treat for everyone here, let's take a look at the key points for farming yellow catfish.

1. Pond conditions

The pond for farming yellow catfish should preferably be about five mu, the water depth in the pond should be maintained at about 1.5 to 2 m, the silt in the pond should not be too deep, with a maximum thickness of no more than 20 cm, and the pond should be built near a water source, which makes changing the water convenient. At the same time, an oxygen supplement or an aerator must be provided, which can maintain the oxygen in the pond. Also, before stocking, the pond needs to be thoroughly disinfected, because the yellow catfish has very strict requirements for its living environment. Only when the pond conditions basically meet the growth needs of the yellow catfish can the fry be stocked.

2. Stocking of fry

Pond farming of yellow catfish is the most traditional farming method. Since the yellow catfish mainly feeds on meat, when stocking yellow catfish we can appropriately stock some silver carp, bighead carp, forage fish and other fast-breeding species, which can play a certain role in purifying the water and at the same time provide sufficient food for the yellow catfish.

3. Water quality management

The yellow catfish has relatively high requirements for water quality, so water quality management is also a key point in farming. Usually we need to change the water about once every half a month, each time changing the water while retaining one third of the original water, as long as the water in the pond maintains a certain degree of transparency. At the same time, after each water change, an appropriate amount of oxygen supplement needs to be added to the water, or an oxygen supply machine should be connected for oxygenation. But in winter, the water is generally changed only once every more than a month, to maintain the water temperature in the pond.

4. Feed feeding

Since we have already stocked some forage fish in the pond, the yellow catfish can hunt for itself in daily life. But relying solely on the forage fish in the pond and the eggs of other fish cannot fully meet the needs of the yellow catfish, so we need to feed the yellow catfish at least once a day, usually choosing to feed at night. This is because the yellow catfish has a characteristic: it is rather afraid of light, so it only hunts at night.

5. Fish disease prevention and control

The yellow catfish is a relatively precious fish species, and many diseases appear during artificial farming, so the prevention and control of fish diseases is crucial in yellow catfish farming. There are many diseases of the yellow catfish, such as enteritis, hemorrhagic edema, trichodina, water mold and malnutrition. So during normal feeding we can mix an appropriate amount of antibiotics into the feed to enhance the resistance of the yellow catfish, and at the same time disinfect the pond from time to time to reduce the harm of trichodina and other parasites.
