Key Points and Detailed Methods of Puffer Fish Seedling Rearing Technology
The puffer fish, also known as the bubble fish or swellfish, gets its name because when it is in danger, its belly inhales air and swells up like a big bubble. Its flesh is as white as frost, its meat is tender and delicious, its protein content is extremely high, and its nutritional value is high. It often appears on people's dining tables and is deeply loved by consumers, with excellent farming prospects. However, during the seedling stage, the puffer fish is relatively fragile, and the slightest carelessness can lead to the death of large numbers of seedlings. Let us now learn about its seedling rearing technology together.

1. Rearing in a Dedicated Pond
Puffer fish seedlings are small and delicate, with poor adaptability to the environment, and external stimuli are not conducive to their growth, so they must be reared in a dedicated pond. Before rearing, pond clearing treatment must first be carried out. Drain all the water from the pond, expose it to the sun until it turns white, remove the sludge at the bottom of the pond, then add water to a depth of 10-20 cm and splash quicklime over the entire pond for disinfection. Generally, 100 kg of quicklime is used per mu; dissolve it in water and splash it over the entire pond while it is still hot. One week after disinfection, once the toxicity has dissipated, the seedlings can be released for rearing.
2. Cultivating Water Quality
After releasing the seedlings, one more step must be carried out, namely cultivating the water quality. On days 3-5 after disinfection, apply fermented organic fertilizer or manure to the pond so that the water quality becomes fertile. Apply 150-200 kg of organic fertilizer per mu, and wait until the water color turns yellow-green or tea-brown. This kind of water quality is not only beneficial to the growth of puffer fish seedlings, but also has good fertility, breeding large amounts of organic organisms and providing abundant natural bait for the growth of puffer fish.
3. Reasonable Stocking Density
When the puffer fish are put into the pond, attention must be paid to changes in water temperature. The difference between the pond water temperature and the water temperature where the puffer fish were temporarily kept should not exceed 2 degrees; otherwise, the drastic change in water temperature will cause the puffer fish seedlings to catch cold, resulting in large numbers of deaths. Therefore, the timing of seedling release must be well controlled. If the water temperature difference is relatively large, water can be continuously added at the temporary holding site to bring it close to the pond water temperature, and the seedlings can be released into the pond when the water temperature difference is less than 2 degrees. When releasing the seedlings, attention must also be paid to the method and density. When releasing them, stand at the upwind side of the fish pond and slowly place the seedlings into the pond. Generally, 120,000-150,000 seedlings are released per mu.
4. Feeding Management
Puffer fish seedlings have small mouths, so in the early stage they are left to feed on the organic organisms in the water by themselves. After water quality cultivation, the natural bait in the water body can support their growth. Half a month after seedling release, soybean milk can be fed, generally once in the morning and once in the evening, with 50 kg fed per mu. After one month, feed can be given. The feed is selected from soybean cake, bran and distiller's grains mixed in proportion. Fertilizer can also be applied promptly according to changes in water quality to maintain water fertility and supply sufficient natural bait.
5. Disinfection and Disease Prevention
Seedlings have low resistance to diseases. Once a disease occurs, it will spread through the entire fish pond at an extremely fast speed and cause large numbers of deaths. Therefore, daily disinfection work must be done well. In particular, feeding grounds, nets, feeding tools and so on should be disinfected with bleaching powder, while the pond should be disinfected by splashing quicklime over the entire pond, using 50 kg of quicklime per mu. Strengthen disease prevention and control work. Common diseases of puffer fish seedlings include gas bubble disease, saprolegniasis, gill rot disease and parasitic diseases. Once a disease is found, the right medicine should be applied promptly.
