How to Improve the Survival Rate When Farming Snails

Snail farming is a recently emerging breeding industry, and snails have become a common wild delicacy on the dining table, with market demand rising step by step. They are high-protein animals with relatively high edible and medicinal value. However, precisely because it is a newly emerging farming venture, its breeding techniques are not yet mature, and many people suffer large-scale deaths when farming them. So how can the survival rate be improved when farming snails? Let's take a look!

1. Farming Site

The site for raising snails is generally based on boxes. When choosing a rearing box, try to choose a transparent one, because this allows you to observe the snails' growth well. The specific size depends on the size and number of the snails; try to choose a larger box so the snails can move around better, and leave a few small holes for ventilation. After choosing the box, spread rearing soil at the bottom. Choose relatively loose and fertile rearing soil, and keep the soil moist. Snails cannot grow in a dry environment, so the soil must be watered regularly to keep it wet.

2. Feeding

Snail farming generally starts from a young age. Snails have very diverse feeding habits; for young snails we can feed some cucumber pieces and tender leaves, etc. The number of feedings per day should not be excessive, and the surrounding temperature should be well controlled. The amount fed depends on the snails' body weight. When feeding adult snails, also feed some fruit pieces, grain powder, etc. The feed can be varied, which better promotes snail growth and improves the survival rate. However, snails cannot eat salt, so avoid putting out food that contains salt; after eating salt, snails may die in severe cases.

3. Farming Conditions

Snails do not need sunlight to grow; direct sunlight will cause illness and death. Keep the temperature within the range of 16-30 degrees, and the optimal growth temperature for snails is around 25 degrees. The humidity in the air also needs to be controlled, because snails like a moist environment. Also keep the pH value of the soil at a moderate level. If the surrounding temperature goes beyond the range of 5-40, the snails will be unable to adapt and will die. Snails are hibernating animals, so we need to do a good job of overwintering management to ensure successful hibernation.

4. Rearing Environment

The snails' growing environment must be kept clean. Snails are animals with a “cleanliness obsession”, so we must do a good job of keeping the box hygienic. Clean the box regularly, dispose of leftover food and excrement in the box, replace the rearing soil, and create a good growing environment for the snails. You can also place an appropriate amount of leaves and branches in the box for the snails to climb and rest on. Pay attention to the ventilation of the box, and also prevent the invasion of the snails' natural enemies to ensure the survival rate of rearing. Regularly use peracetic acid to disinfect the box.

The above are the main methods for improving the survival rate of snails. To improve the survival rate of snails, the main thing is to strengthen the management of the snails. Maintaining a good surrounding environment is the only way to ensure the snails have a good growth process. Focus on preventing the invasion of natural enemies; natural enemies can cause devastating harm to snails, so everyone must pay attention.
