I believe many orchid enthusiasts are unfamiliar with the term French leopard-spotted Phalaenopsis; the older generation all know this type of orchid, which is a fine variety among Phalaenopsis. Now I will talk about this type of orchid.

The French spot is actually a Phalaenopsis with fine leopard-like spots on the middle part of the petals, and spotted-flower breeding can be roughly divided into two major groups: one is the waxy spotted flowers, mostly bred from waxy spotted species such as Phal. amboinensis, Phal. lueddemanniana, and others; the other is the ordinary-textured spotted flowers, based on the Philippine species P. stuartiana improved through more than a hundred years of French hybridization (called the French leopard-spotted Phalaenopsis), whose flowers are usually broader and flatter, with more flowers per spike. But many varieties on the market today are actually produced by crossing these two major groups of spotted flowers with each other.

The French company Vacherot & Lecoufle used the species Phal. stuartiana from northern Mindanao in the northern Philippines, through a hundred years of cultivation and improvement, to breed the French leopard spot; representative varieties include Phal. Frisson (Phalaenopsis aphrodite x Phalaenopsis Jardin des plantes). Because the French leopard spot was successfully bred, it opened a new page in Phalaenopsis spotted breeding; Taiwan, China breeding introduced the French leopard spot and crossed it with various spotted species, successfully producing richly varied Phalaenopsis with abundant spots.
