Causes of Mass Mortality in Razor Clam Farming and Prevention Methods
The razor clam is a mollusk among shellfish, with nutrient-rich meat and extremely high nutritional value. It has a very long farming history in China, sells extremely well on the market, and has good farming prospects. During razor clam production, mass mortality can occur, and it happens rapidly: from the discovery of a small number of deaths to mass death, it takes only a few days, catching farmers off guard. So what causes mass mortality in razor clams? How should it be prevented? Let's take a look at the details together.

1. Poor farming environment
Razor clams like to live in calm inner bays with smooth tidal currents and soft substrate, where they grow extremely quickly. If the farming site is poor, the substrate is heavy and sticky, and air permeability is poor, or if seawater or the substrate becomes polluted, it will cause mass mortality.
Prevention methods: Choosing an excellent farming site is the foundation of razor clam farming. During farming, to prevent the site from aging, the substrate should be raked loose regularly, either manually or with machinery, and then naturally flushed by the rise and fall of seawater.
2. High farming density
The main cause of mass mortality in razor clams is high farming density. Excessive farming density easily leads to a lack of bait, which causes razor clams to fail to get enough nutrition, resulting in weak constitution and slow growth. By the late reproductive period, weak razor clams have difficulty moving and are highly prone to floating to the surface, causing death.
Prevention methods: Reasonable stocking density. Because the farming environment and other conditions differ from region to region, there is no strict standard for farming density. But generally speaking, in areas with better farming conditions, more can be stocked appropriately, and when the razor clams are small, the farming density can also be appropriately increased; in areas with poorer farming conditions, the farming density should be appropriately reduced.
3. Variable climate
The climate factors of high temperature and heavy rain, low pressure, and strong winds (such as typhoons) cause mass mortality in razor clams as follows: 4-5 consecutive days of overcast and rainy weather with precipitation greater than 3000 mm; 3-4 consecutive days with temperatures above 30 degrees; 3-4 consecutive days with air pressure below 1001 mbar; and a force 8 gale at high tide, which can directly wash the razor clams out of the tidal flats, where they pile up and die.
Prevention methods: These climate factors cannot be controlled by human effort; the only option is to strengthen management to avoid losses. During long periods of overcast and rainy weather, carry out drainage measures well; during high temperatures, transfer the razor clams to low-tide positions in a planned way, etc.
4. Diseases
Diseases are also one of the causes of mass mortality in razor clams. Especially during high-temperature periods, razor clams are highly susceptible to diseases. Once an infectious disease appears, after the diseased razor clams die, they rot extremely quickly under high temperatures, causing the substrate to become polluted, and then infect the entire farming site within a short time, causing mass mortality.
Prevention methods: Great importance must be attached to the prevention and control of diseases. Disinfect and sterilize the site in the area to inhibit the growth of pathogens. After discovering diseases, treat them promptly, then strengthen management, remove dead razor clams in time, and comprehensively disinfect the site to improve the substrate.
