What is tobacco mosaic disease?
There are two types of symptoms of tobacco mosaic disease.
1. Common mosaic disease: When infected and damaged by the virus, the young leaves are the first to show symptoms, the mesophyll along the veins turns yellow, and vein clearing appears. Then the dark or light areas gradually expand, forming mottling (mosaic) of alternating yellow and green; in severe cases, the leaves become uneven in thickness, forming blister spots, the leaf margins curl toward the underside, the leaves shrink and twist, becoming deformed, and some appear notched or banded. When the disease occurs early, the plants are severely stunted, the internodes are shortened, they do not bush out, and the leaves do not open.
2. Cucumber mosaic disease: When infected and damaged by the virus, the veins are transparent in the early stage of the disease, then become mosaic, the leaves become narrower and twisted, the surface hairs fall off, and they lose their luster. Some diseased leaves often have margins curling upward, some develop yellow-green or dark green blister spots, some leaves develop brown necrosis on the lateral veins, or have dark brown lightning-like necrosis along the veins. The plants are obviously stunted, the root system develops poorly, and the upper leaves often develop "mosaic scorch spots."
