What are the prospects for donkey farming? Analysis of the market potential of donkey farming

As people's living standards improve, the demand for animal-based foods has gradually become more diversified and premium, and green as well. Donkey meat and offal products are very popular. High in protein, low in fat, and delicious, they can be cooked into a variety of dishes. Since ancient times in China there has been a saying that dragon meat is found in heaven and donkey meat on earth, which shows that people have long recognized donkey products. Donkey meat restaurants can be seen everywhere in some large, medium and small cities, but donkey meat has not yet made it onto ordinary people's dining tables.
Prospects for donkey farming
The prospects for developing the donkey farming industry are very promising. Farming costs are low and feed sources are wide-ranging: straw, rice straw, tree leaves and so on. Farmers have even better conditions for raising them, as 95% of the feed can be self-produced, making the feeding cost even lower; it is a very good side business. Donkey farming is also a good project for laid-off urban workers and demobilized military personnel to start a new business. It can convert straw and forage into meat, and after passing through the animal's belly and returning to the field it becomes high-quality farmyard manure, which can in turn be used to grow green, pollution-free vegetables and grain. The donkey is a very easy livestock animal to raise, with strong disease resistance, a small appetite, and no pickiness about food; its feed consumption is about one-half that of a horse. It does not linger at the trough and leaves as soon as it is full. It is relatively strong in both heat and cold tolerance. In recent years, the unique nutrition and delicious flavor of donkey meat, as well as the medicinal value of donkey products, have attracted increasing attention. In order to improve competitiveness in domestic and international markets, producing pollution-free donkey meat is imperative. At present, the prospects for donkey farming are mainly reflected in the following aspects:
1. Too few resources.
2. Very few large-scale farms.
3. The benefits of donkey farming are not yet recognized; at the current farming volume, only 30% of the market can be satisfied.
Advantages of donkey farming
1. Easy to raise: they like eating crop straw, pasture grass, wild grass and so on, and have a small appetite, only equivalent to 1/3 that of cattle, so farming costs are low. Meat donkeys are tolerant of coarse feed and like eating corn stalks and wheat straw; as long as the forage is good, they hardly need concentrated feed. They also reproduce quickly, and their growth period is shorter than that of cattle and horses, at about 1.5 years.
2. Low risk: few diseases, a good market for donkey meat, and market prices generally slightly higher than those of beef and mutton.
3. Can be used for draft work: donkeys are good helpers for farm work.
Analysis of farming benefits
At present, the main farming methods for commercial donkeys are divided into breeding methods, fattening methods and mixed methods.
1. Breeding method
The price of buying one adult Dezhou female donkey is about 4,000 yuan. In 3 years she can produce 2 foals. At the end of the 3 years, after the second foal's nursing period ends, the first foal has already grown into an adult donkey and sells for about 3,800 yuan. Adding the second foal's sale price of 1,800 yuan after weaning, the total income over three years is 5,600 yuan.
Cost of the female donkey: 1,100 days (3 years) × 1.5 yuan = 1,650 yuan; the first foal is sold at 1 year and 7 months old (570 days total), of which the first 6 months (180 days) are mainly for nursing.
Feeding cost: (570-180) days × 1 yuan ≈ 400 yuan; the third foal is sold at 6 months old, and before sale it is mainly nursing, so the feeding cost is not counted.
Mating cost: two matings cost 100 × 2 = 200 yuan.
Total cost: 1,650 + 400 + 200 = 2,250 yuan.
Benefit analysis: raising one breeding female donkey for 3 years yields a profit of 3,350 yuan, averaging 1,100 yuan per year.
2. Fattening method
The price of buying a young foal about half a year old is about 1,800 yuan. It is raised and fattened for about 6 months before being sold, at a price of about 3,000 yuan; the farming cost averages 2 yuan per day, including 2 jin of concentrated feed per day per animal and 7-8 jin of roughage per day per animal. The total fattening cost per donkey is about 360 yuan, and the farming benefit over half a year is 1,000 yuan per animal. The forage cost per donkey is about 150 yuan per animal, and the price of an adult donkey is about 1,500 yuan.
3. Mixed method
The mixed method is a combination of the breeding method and the fattening method. Invest in buying one female donkey, fatten her, and add the foal; the forage cost for the two donkeys is 300 yuan. After 1 year the foal is sold and brings in 2,000 yuan in income. In this way one donkey can bring nearly 1,000 yuan in income each year, and the cost can be recovered in less than two years.
Summary
Whether for individual farmers or large-scale raisers, the economic benefits of donkey farming are considerable. Especially for farmers raising donkeys, there are uniquely favorable conditions: there is almost no need to consider labor and forage costs, and the animals can be used for draft work at the same time. Raising one donkey can increase a farmer's income by more than 1,000 yuan.
