Enteritis and Diarrhea in Masked Palm Civets
[Symptoms] The sick civet has reduced appetite, accompanied by vomiting, and loose watery stools (the feces of a healthy civet are soft in consistency) mixed with mucus, and finally dies from severe dehydration.
[Treatment] ① Mix baicaoshuang (i.e. soot from the bottom of a cooking pot, but soot from a coal-burning pot must not be used) into congee and feed it. Mix 3-5 grams of baicaoshuang into 1 bowl of congee, and blend in 5-16 grams of rock sugar and 5 milliliters of vitamin C liquid. ② Feed milk fruit, 2-3 per meal, twice a day, or guava, 1-2 per day, twice a day. ③ Mix 1-2 tablets of oxytetracycline into the food daily and let it eat together, or administer by manual force-feeding. Muscle injection of veterinary berberine hydrochloride can also be used, injecting 5 milliliters per animal per day, and it will heal in 2-3 days. If the illness is more severe, warm furazolidone solution (dissolve 2-4 tablets of furazolidone in 500 grams of water) can be administered by gavage at the same time to help it expel the waste matter. If prolapse of the rectum occurs, wash the prolapsed area with a 0.1% potassium permanganate aqueous solution, manually help it return to position, suture the anus, stop feeding, and feed 1-2 tablets of oxytetracycline dissolved in fresh water; after 3-5 days, remove the stitches and it will heal.

[Symptoms] The sick civet has dry feces, the body is arched, the head is drawn down toward the chest, the tail droops, there is eye discharge, it stays alone away from the group, does not want to eat or drink, and sometimes the body trembles.
[Treatment] Dissolve 1 vial of 400,000-unit penicillin injection in 1-1.5 kilograms of cold boiled water and let the sick civet drink it (the medicinal solution must be finished within 1-2 hours). Inject penicillin intramuscularly every day, 150,000-200,000 units each time, or inject 40,000 units of gentamicin, for 2-3 consecutive days. Feed more melons and fruits and juicy, easy-to-digest foods. Several drops of peanut oil and 5-10 grams of table salt can also be added to thin congee. Use the above treatment method for 2-3 days.
