The venom of the hornet and prevention methods

The hornet, also known as the genus Vespa, has bright body colors usually alternating yellow and black, well-developed mandibles, a stinger at the end of the abdomen connected to a venom gland, and tiger-stripe markings on its body, which is why it is called the "hornet." Its main distribution countries are Pakistan, southern China and Indonesia.

Habits of the hornet

The hornet has bright body colors usually alternating yellow and black, well-developed mandibles, and a stinger at the end of the abdomen connected to a venom gland. Hornet venom is a toxic protein composed of many amino acids, and it can cause poisoning symptoms in people, such as redness and swelling, intense itching, stabbing pain and other allergic reactions, and in severe cases can cause the victim to go into shock and die. Hornets belong to social insect colonies, whose members include one egg-laying female, the queen, and a large number of workers, most of which are females. Males account for only a small minority.

Hornets are most commonly found in mountainous areas and the wild. The black-bellied hornet is a diurnal insect and an omnivorous insect. Their larvae feed mainly on caterpillars and other insect larvae, while adult wasps feed on ripe fruit or tree sap.

The venom of the hornet

1. Hornet venom: a person must be stung by hornets more than 200 times before their life is in danger. The best treatment for stings is to apply ice, which can relieve most of the pain. In addition, the hornet's stinger must not be pulled directly backwards, as this will inject the venom further into the body and cause greater harm.

2. Hornet protein: hornet protein can trigger an allergic reaction in the body, causing a drop in blood pressure, shock and danger to life. Generally speaking, people with an allergic constitution are more likely to suffer allergic shock, so some doctors abroad even suggest that people with an allergic constitution should carry adrenal cortex hormones and anti-allergy, anti-inflammatory drugs or steroids with them before going up into the mountains, so that they can inject them immediately to save their lives if stung.

Prevention of hornets

In autumn, in order to prepare the food needed for hibernation, hornets often come out in large numbers, and it is easy for them to accidentally harm humans. Hornets themselves do not attack on their own, so to avoid hornet stings and attacks, pay attention to the following principles.

1. Stay away from hornets: do not attack hornets on your own initiative, and then you will not be attacked.

2. Do not wear brightly colored clothes when outings: hornets like brightly colored flowers and plants with a fragrant scent, so when we go up into the mountains in late summer and early autumn, we should not wear brightly colored clothes, otherwise it will often attract hornets around our bodies and we will easily be attacked, so when going up into the mountains, try to wear dull-colored clothes.

3. Do not use perfume: do not go up into the mountains after using fragrant shampoo or deodorant, and do not apply perfume that prevents body odor, so that hornet attacks can be avoided.

4. Try to wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when going up into the mountains: this can protect the body; try not to wear short skirts or shorts, and you should wear a hat to avoid hornet attacks. A hat can sometimes also prevent the fragrant smell of shampoo from attracting hornets, so pay special attention before going up into the mountains.
