How big can red-eared sliders grow?

The red-eared slider may be the most widely kept reptile in the world. It is a turtle species with great ornamental value. Because of its cute appearance, brilliant colors, and extreme ease of care, many people keep it as a pet. It is currently very common and widespread on the domestic market. Let's take a look below at how big red-eared sliders can grow!

How big can red-eared sliders grow?

In an environment with suitable temperatures, most red-eared sliders can grow to around 30 cm, and females can reach 1000-2500 grams in weight. Different individual red-eared sliders also differ somewhat in body size and weight.

How long do red-eared sliders live?

American reptile ecologist Professor J.W. Gibbons once observed the lifespan of red-eared sliders using the mark-recapture method. After 23 years of research, the results showed that among more than 10,000 turtles, only 3.4% could live over 25 years, 7.3% of individuals lived 20-24 years, 21.4% could live 15-21 years, and about 68% could live fewer than 15 years. Of course, under specific keeping conditions, the lifespan of red-eared sliders may be somewhat longer.

The living habits of red-eared sliders

1. Environment: The red-eared slider is an aquatic animal and can live in deep water. Young turtles prefer to inhabit shallow water. They are gregarious by nature and like sunlight; their basking behavior is stronger than that of other turtles. They hibernate from November to March of the following year and begin activity in April. They start feeding when the water temperature is around 16°C, hibernate below 11°C, and enter deep hibernation below 6°C.

2. Diet: The red-eared slider is an omnivorous turtle and likes animal-based bait, such as fish, pork, animal innards, freshwater mussels, snails, bloodworms, red worms, yellow mealworms, snails, insects, maggots, and various foods rich in crude fiber. Shrimp meat is the red-eared slider's favorite.

3. Temperament: The red-eared slider is lively in temperament, more active and restless than any freshwater turtle native to China, and is sensitive to the sound of water and vibrations. Once startled, they all dive into the water.

4. Reproduction: The red-eared slider reaches sexual maturity early. Generally, a female weighing more than one jin can lay eggs, with a carapace over 16 cm. Its reproductive capacity is strong. In its native range, the clutch size is 6-11 eggs, with a maximum of up to 30 eggs. April to September is the egg-laying and mating period for the turtles, among which more turtles lay eggs in May to July, and more turtles mate in August to September.
