How long do Fantasy Horned Frogs live

The Fantasy Horned Frog, also known as the Dream Horned Frog, belongs to a category of horned frogs, but it is not a wild native species; rather, it is a hybrid bred by artificially crossing the Surinam Horned Frog and the South American Horned Frog (Argentine Horned Frog). It has the dual characteristics of both the Surinam Horned Frog and the South American Horned Frog, and has become an indispensable mainstay in the horned frog market, a must-have variety in almost every frog keeper's collection. Let's take a look below at how long the Fantasy Horned Frog lives!

How long do Fantasy Horned Frogs live

The Fantasy Horned Frog is very beautiful in appearance, with tall horns, a three-dimensional body shape, back patterns resembling a butterfly, a black speckled chin, and those faintly visible black gloves. The downside is that its lifespan is too short, because it is a hybrid with unstable genes, with a lifespan of about 2 to 4 years. It is relatively simple to keep and very easy to raise.

How to select a Fantasy Horned Frog

The Fantasy Horned Frog has 3 lineages: Red Butterfly, Green Butterfly, and Green-Backed Butterfly. When selecting a lineage, look at whether the butterfly pattern on the body is symmetrical and whether it runs continuously all the way down. Red should be deep red, green should be bright and vivid. The green-backed variety with a red base color plus a green stripe on the back is also a relatively rare variety. However, among Fantasy Horned Frogs, the one that generally sells for the highest price is the Green Butterfly.

Differences between the Butterfly and the Surinam Horned Frog

1. Surinam Horned Frog: The Surinam Horned Frog has the longest horns among horned frogs, a relatively pointed mouth, and body colors generally brown, green, and reddish. The brown ones generally have a "person"-shaped marking on the mouth, with differences between darker or lighter shades. Green ones generally have no markings on the mouth, or only faint ones if any. On the back there are neat butterfly patterns, generally extending to the anal area, radially symmetrical. The important difference from the Fantasy Horned Frog is that the chin is entirely black.

2. Fantasy Horned Frog: The Fantasy Horned Frog refers to individuals bred by crossing the Surinam Horned Frog and the Argentine Horned Frog (Bell's Horned Frog), not wild. The horns are relatively long, and the mouth is generally like that of the Argentine Horned Frog, relatively pointed. The butterfly pattern on the back may be connected or broken, and may also extend to the anal area. Body colors generally include red, coffee, yellow, green, and mixed colors of the above. The pattern colors are relatively dark, and the two sides are generally asymmetrical in radiation. The important difference from the Surinam Horned Frog is that the chin is not entirely black, with dotted markings.
