How long can a cockroach live?

Cockroaches are also known as "xiaoqiang", "huangponiang", "touyoupo" and so on, generally referring to insects belonging to the order Blattodea. Among them, only about several dozen species invade human homes, and a few species are kept by humans as pets or as food for pets, while the vast majority of species can only be seen in wild mountain streams and forests or in insect museums. Now let us take a look at how long a cockroach can live!

The lifespan of adult cockroaches is also relatively long. The German cockroach has the shortest lifespan, about 100 days or so, while the longest-lived American cockroach can survive for as long as 1 year. Lifespan also varies depending on the species and environmental conditions. Taking the German cockroach, which has the shortest cycle, as an example, it generally takes more than 2 months to complete one generation, while the longest, such as the American cockroach, takes more than 1 year. The length of the life history varies not only by species but also by different conditions such as temperature and nutrition. A fertilized female cockroach also produces many egg cases over her lifetime; the American cockroach can produce more than 50, so cockroaches have very strong reproductive capacity.

What food do cockroaches eat?

Cockroaches are omnivorous insects with an extremely wide range of food types. Various foods include bread, rice, pastries, cooked meat and vegetable dishes, melons and fruits, and beverages, among others. They are especially fond of fragrant, sweet, and oily flour-based foods, and have a habit of favoring fats and oils. Among sugars, brown sugar and maltose have the strongest attraction for them. Besides liking various foods, cockroaches also often bite and eat other items. For example, in residences, warehouses, storage rooms and other places, they can gnaw on cotton and wool products, leather goods, paper, books, soap and so on. Outdoors, in garbage piles, sewers, toilets and other places, they feed on decaying organic matter, and even gnaw on dead animals. However, different species of cockroaches also differ somewhat in their feeding habits.

The secret of cockroaches surviving without a head

1. A cockroach can still survive for a week without its head. Once you understand why cockroaches and some other insects can survive without a head, you can understand why humans cannot. If a human is decapitated, they will immediately bleed, blood pressure drops, and the transport of oxygen and nutrients is hindered, making it impossible to supply the tissues needed to sustain life. In addition, humans rely on the mouth or nose to breathe, and the brain controls these functions, so if the head is cut off, breathing stops. Furthermore, without a head, humans cannot eat.

2. Cockroaches have a different blood pressure system from humans. Cockroaches do not have an extensive vascular network like humans, nor do they need very high blood pressure to ensure that blood can reach the capillaries. They have an open circulatory system that does not require very high pressure. When you cut off their head, the wound on their neck quickly clots due to the action of platelets, so they do not bleed continuously. Moreover, cockroaches breathe through spiracles——they have small openings on each segment of their body. In addition, they do not need the brain to control respiratory function, and their blood does not need to transport oxygen. They only need to breathe air directly through the spiracle ducts.

3. Cockroaches are cold-blooded animals, which means they need far less food than humans. In other words, one meal can sustain them for weeks. As long as they do not encounter predators and their wounds are not infected by bacteria or viruses, they can survive.
