What are the commonly used chemicals for disinfecting fish ponds?

The commonly used chemicals for disinfecting fish ponds include bleaching powder, sodium dichloroisocyanurate, trichloroisocyanuric acid and chlorine dioxide disinfectant. When choosing fish pond disinfection chemicals, you should select the appropriate chemical according to the actual situation. Below, the editor will introduce the effects and usage methods of these common fish pond disinfection chemicals!

Commonly used chemicals for disinfecting fish ponds

1. Bleaching powder: Bleaching powder has varying degrees of killing effects on bacteria, fungi and viruses, and is mainly used for the prevention and treatment of bacterial fish diseases. Because its aqueous solution contains a large amount of calcium hydroxide, it can also adjust the pH value of pond water. Bleaching powder has poor stability. Under general storage conditions, its effective chlorine naturally decreases by 1%-3% per month, and its decomposition speed accelerates when exposed to light, heat, moisture and acidic environments. When using bleaching powder for disinfection and sterilization of fish ponds, the concentration for whole-pond splashing is generally 1ppm.

2. Sodium dichloroisocyanurate: Sodium dichloroisocyanurate contains about 60% effective chlorine, has stable properties, and is relatively easily soluble in water, with a solubility of 25%. Its aqueous solution is weakly acidic, with a pH value between 5.5-6.5. After dissolving in water, it produces hypochlorous acid and has effects such as sterilization, algae killing, deodorization and water purification. It can prevent and treat various bacterial fish diseases, and the general dosage is 0.3ppm-0.6ppm. The commercially available dichloro preparation is also named: Yukang.

3. Trichloroisocyanuric acid: Trichloroisocyanuric acid (commercially available products are also named: Qianglüjing, Qianglü, Lüshaning, Yukangjing, Chaojunqing Type A, Nongkangbao No. 1, etc.) contains 35%-38% effective chlorine. This chemical has good stability and is easy to preserve. The dosage for whole-pond splashing is 0.3ppm-0.4ppm, and the concentration for pond clearing is 5ppm-10ppm. Its sterilization effect is 100 times that of bleaching powder.

4. Chlorine dioxide disinfectant: Chlorine dioxide disinfectant (trade names: Baiduqing, Baidujing, chlorine dioxide, sodium chlorite, etc.) is a broad-spectrum sterilizing disinfectant and water purifier. It can promote the oxidative decomposition of amino acids in microbial proteins in water bodies, thereby achieving the purpose of killing bacteria, viruses, algae and protozoa. The use concentration is 0.5ppm-2ppm. It is mostly solid packaging, divided into bag A and bag B. When using, dissolve bag A and bag B separately, then mix them together for activation for 3 minutes-5 minutes, and then splash over the whole pond.

Precautions for disinfecting fish ponds

When using chlorine-containing disinfectants to disinfect fish ponds, the dosage must be strictly controlled. Too low a dosage will affect the disinfection and sterilization effect; too high a dosage will turn the disinfectant into a fish poison. In recent years, the frequent incidents of mass collective poisoning and death of fish caused by the use of chlorine-containing disinfection are caused by excessive use. Because chlorine-containing disinfectants are all applied by the whole-pond splashing method, when using them, the fish pond water body must first be accurately calculated. The calculation method is: rectangular (or square) fish pond volume = length × width × average water depth; circular fish pond water volume = 3.14 × fish pond radius × water depth. If the bottom cross-section of the fish pond is trapezoidal, when calculating the volume, the length and width and measurement should be based on the midpoint from the water surface to the pond bottom.

The time for whole-pond splashing of chemicals should be flexibly determined according to weather changes so as to achieve the best efficacy. Under normal circumstances, it is advisable to apply the chemical before 11 a.m. or after 3 p.m. on sunny days, and stop applying it on cloudy and rainy days. When splashing chemicals, feed first and then splash the chemicals. The splashing position should start from the upwind area and gradually splash downwind toward the downwind area, so as to fully increase the uniformity of the chemical in the water body. Note that all around the fish pond and the corners should be evenly splashed.
