Prevention and treatment methods for common goldfish diseases

To treat a sick fish, you must know the source and condition of the disease. Without experience, it is very difficult to judge the symptoms accurately. The most basic approach is to classify the disease and then apply the appropriate treatment. When you cannot tell what disease the goldfish has, you have no choice but to use a broader treatment approach and choose medications with a wider spectrum. If you find one goldfish in the tank is sick, you should immediately move the sick fish to another isolation treatment tank. Only in this way can you prevent other goldfish from also becoming infected. The treatment methods for goldfish diseases are introduced below:

Tail rot and fin rot

[Cause] The bacterial tail rot and fin rot of goldfish are highly contagious, starting from the fin rays and then spreading until the body rots and the fish dies.

[Symptoms] Fin rot has two types of symptoms. The first starts rotting from the edge of the fin and then extends inward; the second starts from the middle part of the fin and spreads in all directions. The affected area turns white and finally falls off. After transport or spawning, the goldfish's body resistance weakens, and at this time it is most susceptible to this disease.

[Prevention and treatment methods] Once a sick fish is found, it must be isolated immediately, and drugs such as antibiotics or acridine yellow should be used to treat the sick fish. When the symptoms of fin rot appear slowly, the treatment is to change part of the tank water, clean the filter and add a little table salt to the tank, and stop feeding for several days. The salt treatment works by increasing the specific gravity of the water and changing the osmotic pressure in the water, killing bacteria and other pathogens through changes in osmosis. You can also directly use commercially available Sera anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic treatment, Meilijian sterilizing remedy, Queen Whale special goldfish disease treatment, Queen Whale anti-bacterial treatment and AZ00 anti-bacterial treatment.

Bacterial gill disease

[Symptoms] In goldfish infected with bacterial gill disease, the first symptom is loss of appetite, often staying under the water surface, and rapid breathing. If you lift the rear edge of the gill cover, you will see white, damaged gill filaments. Especially in crowded tanks, when water quality deteriorates, goldfish are most susceptible to this disease, and it is highly contagious, so sick fish must be isolated.

[Prevention and treatment methods] The methods and medications for treating this disease are the same as those for bacterial tail rot and fin rot, but salt needs to be added to the water (add two grams of table salt per one hundred liters of water) to reduce the loss of body fluids from the rotten gill filaments out of the fish body, which would cause the goldfish to die of dehydration. Fungi can also cause rotten gills, so water quality must be improved; only then can the condition be controlled. Filters can remove suspended particles, prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi, and keep the tank water clean, so strengthening the filtration system can prevent the occurrence of gill disease.

Scale protrusion disease

[Symptoms] In aquariums, it is often seen that goldfish have scales protruding and falling off due to disease. In most sick fish, almost all the scales stand up, and only a few sick fish show partial scale protrusion. If you rub the surface of a sick fish, the already loosened scales will fall off one after another.

[Cause] The pathogen causing this disease is still unclear, but it mostly occurs in winter and summer when the water temperature is low.

[Prevention and treatment methods] The mortality rate of scale protrusion disease is very high. If discovered early and treated with antibiotics, such as Meilijian sterilizing remedy and AZ00 anti-bacterial treatment, the sick fish can also be cured. This disease is not contagious, but caring for sick fish is quite troublesome.

Red spot disease

[Symptoms] Obvious red spots appear on the sides and abdomen of the sick fish, which is its greatest characteristic. If bacteria in the water increase greatly, the goldfish's skin will be damaged and thus filled with blood.

[Prevention and treatment methods] The tank water should be changed immediately, and it can heal without medication. Severely sick fish need to be isolated and treated with antibiotics.
