Bait recipes for catching silver carp

Silver carp is a mid-upper layer fish and a typical filter-feeding species. The bait for catching silver carp should highlight the characteristics of sour, sweet and pungent, and it is best to create a localized, clouding sour bait zone. It should also be somewhat resistant to soaking and fairly firm. When putting it on the hook, dip as much white flour as possible to help with clouding. Let's take a look together below!

Feeding characteristics of silver carp

Silver carp is a filter-feeding fish that uses the special structure of its gills to filter plankton from the water. It likes high temperatures, and its appetite is strongest in hot summer. It feeds on plankton, likes to eat grass carp droppings and added chicken and cow manure, and also eats soybean residue powder, bran and rice bran, etc. It is very interested in fermented foods with sour and sweet flavors.

Living environment of silver carp

Silver carp likes nutrient-rich water. Individuals of similar size often gather and swim in schools to the middle and upper layers of the water, especially in clear-water areas where the water quality is relatively fertile, and they mostly gather in deep riverbeds and lakes to overwinter.

The appetite of silver carp is directly proportional to water temperature. It likes high temperatures, and the most suitable water temperature is 23°C~32°C. In hot summer, the appetite of silver carp is strongest. In the north, July to August is a good time to catch silver carp. After the Autumn Equinox, as the weather gradually turns cool, the appetite of silver carp decreases somewhat, and they become difficult to catch.

Bait recipes for silver carp

1. Mix the "sour soup noodle dough" (70%) that rural people in Northeast China often eat in summer with freshly steamed cornmeal steamed buns (30%), then knead with white flour into a dough of suitable softness and firmness and put it on the hook.

2. Mix leftover fishing bait that does not contain fish meal or shrimp meal with some pastry crumbs or sesame paste residue, put it in a plastic bag, seal it, and place it in sunlight for more than two weeks. When putting it on the hook, mix in some cornmeal steamed buns or white flour. The longer this bait is kept, the better; the effect is even better after a year. This bait does not need to be specially made and saves grain.

3. The ingredients are cornmeal (40%), white flour (10%), glutinous rice flour (5%), cooked soybean cake or soybean flour (10%), and an appropriate amount of brown sugar or white sugar. Mix the cornmeal, white flour, glutinous rice flour and soybean cake powder together, scald with boiling water until about 70% cooked, let cool, mix evenly and steam into steamed buns. Stir-fry the wheat bran over low heat until fragrant. Add fresh sesame paste residue at the time, add dried blocks after softening, crush the pastry crumbs and add them, mix the above bait evenly, put it in a plastic bag, place it in sunlight to ferment for two weeks, and then it can be used. This bait should be made in a larger batch at one time.

4. Scald cornmeal (80%) and white flour (15%) with boiling water until 70% cooked, then steam into steamed buns, put it in a plastic bag, and sun it for two weeks. When fishing, knead it with commercial silver carp bait into dough and put it on the hook.

5. Mix soybean curd residue with some white sugar, put it in a plastic bag and let it sour for two weeks. When fishing, knead it together with freshly steamed cornmeal steamed buns or white flour to make a dough of moderate softness and firmness. This bait is low in price and widely available. When fishing for silver carp with a hand rod, it can be used to make a feeding spot.

6. When using a hand rod with a "Taiwan fishing" rig to catch crucian carp, competitive crucian carp bait with good clouding performance often attracts schools of silver carp to suck and eat it. Among them, the most effective is "Marukyu" No. 5 crucian carp bait.

7. In the summer season for catching silver carp, sour bait often runs out. Some anglers have just learned to fish for silver carp and do not have well-fermented sour bait on hand. They can crush cornmeal steamed buns, mix in qu liquor, rice vinegar, white grain and white flour, and knead into a dough of moderate softness and firmness to put on the hook.
