Solutions for Guppy Dystocia

All livebearing animals can experience difficulty during birth, and guppies can also have trouble when giving birth to fry. If not handled properly, it can very likely lead to the death of the mother fish. Therefore, when you notice your guppy is about to give birth, it is best to observe nearby. As soon as you spot signs of dystocia, you should come up with a solution immediately, inducing labor while ideally ensuring the safety of both the mother guppy and her fry.

Main Causes of Guppy Dystocia

Generally speaking, guppy dystocia is caused by the external environment. When the mother fish is suddenly disturbed by external interference or experiences drastic environmental changes before giving birth, it can cause guppy dystocia. If the water quality environment changes repeatedly, such as pH or water temperature fluctuating, it can also put the mother fish under great stress and lead to dystocia. Once dystocia occurs, it is best to artificially induce labor for the guppy to ensure the safety of the mother fish and the fry.

Artificial Induction of Labor for Guppy Dystocia

1. Place a heater rod in the tank to slowly raise the water temperature, then remove the heater rod and let it cool naturally. Repeat this several times to achieve the effect.

2. Place the mother fish that is about to give birth into completely new water. A gentle water acclimation process can effectively urge the mother fish to give birth. This can also help prevent the mother fish from getting sick and provide good environmental conditions for the soon-to-be-born fry.

3. You can perform surgery on the guppy by cutting open its belly and extracting the baby guppies. When they first come out, you will find they are wrapped in egg membranes. Once the egg membranes are broken, the baby guppies will be lively and active. Of course, this is done only as a last resort, and in such cases, the survival rate of the mother fish is low.

Cesarean Surgery for Guppy Dystocia

For mother fish that truly cannot give birth smoothly, we need to use cesarean section to end their suffering, while also preserving as many of their offspring as possible. First, prepare two shallow dishes with water, one water bottle, two droppers, one pair of scissors with the tips cut off, two pins, tweezers, scissors, alcohol, and other tools.

1. First, drip alcohol on the gills to anesthetize the fish.

2. Quickly kill the mother fish to avoid suffering, then cut a small opening from the heart backward, use tweezers to tear it open backward to expose the ovaries.

3. Place the ovaries into a shallow dish and use a dropper to flush open the ovarian membrane. The more mature fry will automatically break through the egg membrane and swim out under this pressure.

4. Most of the fish cannot break the egg membrane on their own and need assistance. Note: those with shaky hands or poor eyesight should not try this. Usually, the fish inside the egg is positioned like a comma, with the head and tail almost connected, but there is a gap. One pin is inserted into that gap, and the other pin is used to pick.

5. Pull the pin inserted in the gap outward, and the fry will come out.

6. Suck the fry into clean water, and you are done.
