Now let us take a look at which is more venomous, the banded krait or the many-banded krait!
Which is more venomous, the banded krait or the many-banded krait?
Both the banded krait and the many-banded krait are highly venomous snakes of the genus Bungarus, but the banded krait is less venomous than its close relative, the many-banded krait. The many-banded krait is one of the most venomous snakes in mainland China; generally, if no antivenom is administered within half an hour after a bite, there is a risk to life, whereas the banded krait is far less venomous than the many-banded krait. Its fame is borrowed from the many-banded krait, but the banded krait is still a highly venomous snake, and its numbers are also greater than those of the many-banded krait.
How potent is the venom of the many-banded krait?
Although the venom glands of the many-banded krait are very small, its venom is extremely potent, the most venomous in the genus Bungarus. In fact, the many-banded krait is the fourth most venomous snake on land after the small-scaled taipan, the eastern brown snake and the taipan, and it also ranks among the top eight in the overall ranking of the world's most venomous snakes. The LD-50 (median lethal dose) of the many-banded krait is 0.08-0.108 mg/kg, making it the most venomous snake on land in the world outside Oceania. However, because the many-banded krait is timid by nature and gentle in temperament and does not actively attack people, there are not many cases of people being injured by it.
Is the banded krait a protected animal?
The banded krait is already extremely rare in the wild. Because it is one of the famous snakes used for food, and its body soaked in liquor and its snake gall are also used in medicine, it has long been hunted in large numbers for domestic sale or export, causing the species population of the banded krait to decline by 50% between 1997 and 2007. At present, this species has been included in the "List of Terrestrial Wild Animals under State Protection That Are Beneficial or of Important Economic or Scientific Research Value" issued by China's State Forestry Administration on August 1, 2000. Note that illegal hunting of wild animals under state protection will be subject to criminal law sanctions.
