A Complete Guide to Guppy Disease Prevention and Treatment Techniques

Guppies have brilliantly colorful bodies and graceful, natural shapes, making them highly favored by tropical freshwater fish keepers. During the breeding process, most guppy illnesses are caused by the keeper's own negligence. Let's take a look below at common guppy disease prevention and treatment techniques!
Guppy White Spot Disease
[Symptoms] White spots less than 1 mm in diameter appear all over the fish's body, and they always start on the fins before spreading across the whole body. If left untreated, the fish will gradually weaken and soon die. This is a typical disease of freshwater fish. Although guppies do not have a high incidence rate, it is not to say they will never get it, so it should not be taken lightly.
[Causes] The disease is caused by parasitism by ciliates such as Ichthyophthirius, and the white spots on the body surface are the parasites themselves. In some cases the skin surrounding the parasite also appears white; the more white spots there are, the more severe the parasitic infestation.
[Prevention and Treatment] The pathogen of white spot disease is a ciliate called Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, making it a parasitic disease. When the water temperature rises to 28°C, Ichthyophthirius stops developing and gradually dies. Therefore, when guppies are found to have white spot disease, treatment can be carried out by changing the water, adding salt and raising the temperature: first change half the water, then add 3 g/L of sea salt based on the volume of the rearing water, and finally raise the water temperature to 30-32°C. Generally, results can be seen after 3-5 days.
Guppy Fin Rot Disease
[Symptoms] Guppy fin rot starts with a yellow-white sticky substance attaching to the tail fin, and before long it spreads to all the fins and gradually causes decay. Especially as the condition progresses, the fins become rotten and may even break off at the tail fin. As a result, appetite drops sharply, and soon even the muscles are invaded and corroded, leading to weakness and death. Therefore, early treatment is necessary. A characteristic of this disease is that more male fish are affected.
[Causes] It is caused by infection with Aeromonas bacteria. The route of infection is wounds, and most injuries are caused by fighting among fish or rough contact.
[Prevention and Treatment] Soak the fish in salt water at a concentration of 3% for 10 minutes, 1-2 times a day, and keep the rearing water quality good. After a few days, the necrotic tissue will naturally slough off.
Guppy Pin Tail Disease
[Symptoms] The angle of the tail fin noticeably decreases, and in severe cases it contracts into a cone shape. The fish constantly shakes its body and tends to gather in corners at the water surface or bottom. Diseased fish do not die quickly, but feeding and development are affected. Fry within 10 days of age and separated fry around 1-2 months old are prone to the disease. Adult fish are less commonly infected.
[Causes] 1) Stress-induced tail clamping: for example, fish that have undergone long-distance transport, fish whose water quality has been suddenly changed, and external stimuli such as being startled during netting or strong light can all cause a stress response in the fish and lead to tail clamping. 2) Pathological tail clamping: a fish tank with a small water volume, crowded fish, leftover bait, and infrequent water changes can lead to massive growth of water mold and other bacteria that cause disease.
[Prevention and Treatment] 1) Rest the fish for a few days in a dark, quiet place, add some salt to the water, feed less, and as the fish's health gradually returns to normal, routine care will lead to recovery (only for stress-induced tail clamping). 2) Oxytetracycline + salt, water temperature 26°C, and results can be seen after several days. 3) Use Haibao brand water mold treatment and dose according to the instructions. Or treat with sea salt by splashing saturated salt water throughout the tank.
Guppy Water Mold Disease
[Symptoms] Water mold disease is also known as mouth rot disease or cotton disease, but its proper name is water mold disease. It occurs when water mold parasitizes the body surface, giving it a cotton-like white appearance. Before long it spreads over the whole body and rots the skin. Especially as the condition progresses, the areas where water mold is thriving may rot and fall off. After the middle stage of the illness, the fish loses appetite and swims less actively, and soon dies.
[Causes] Wounds on the body surface, or wounds caused by parasites such as anchor worms and fish lice, are colonized by fungi of the family Saprolegniaceae, causing a secondary disease.
[Prevention and Treatment] 1) Use a 1-2% salt solution with a small amount of rivanol, just enough to turn the water pale yellow, and bathe the fish for several days until the water mold disappears. 2) Using malachite green, methylene blue, or raising the water temperature above 25°C can effectively control the spread of this disease. However, combined use with antibacterial medication tends to be effective. 3) This disease is usually a secondary infection, meaning the fish is susceptible to water mold infection before old wounds heal, so dealing with water mold disease should focus mainly on preventing wounds on the body surface.
Guppy Dropsy (Pinecone Disease)
[Symptoms] The scales all over the body stand up, and the whole body also swells. The disease gets its name because the fish looks like a pinecone. If the condition progresses, the scales will fall off, and the fish will no longer be able to swim, leading to death.
[Causes] Poor water quality, too low dissolved oxygen, water temperature changes beyond the range the fish can adapt to, fish injuries, etc.
[Prevention and Treatment] 1) Whether it is whole-body or localized dropsy, first remove and isolate the diseased fish, pay attention to water quality conditions, and carry out medicated baths with antibiotics such as chloramphenicol to prevent secondary bacterial infection. 2) Sprinkle 3% coarse salt into the tank. Raise the water temperature to 28°C, and results can be seen after one week. 3) Prepare a mixed solution of 1% salt water and 1% baking soda, soak the fish for 10 minutes, and results can be seen only after repeated treatments. If a low dose is splashed in an aquarium containing 100 kg of water, sticking with it for several days can also be effective. 4) Add 0.1 g of nitrofurazone powder and 2 tubes of gentamicin, dissolve them in an aquarium measuring 80 cm x 50 cm x 40 cm, and a long medicated bath has a certain effect, especially for diseased fish in the early stages.
Guppy Vitamin C Deficiency
[Symptoms] It is relatively common, mainly manifested as loss of appetite, slow growth, abnormal body shape, slow swimming, etc. In severe cases, symptoms similar to scurvy in mammals may even appear. The symptoms of vitamin C deficiency vary among different fish, but most lead to poor growth, low immunity, and low feed conversion rate.
[Prevention and Treatment] Long-term use of vitamin C ornamental fish feed can avoid the above problems and improve resistance.
