How to tell male and female oscar fish? A detailed guide to practical sexing methods

The oscar fish is a common tropical ornamental fish. It is fairly large in size and looks clumsy, yet it swims with sharp agility. It has distinct males and females, and telling the two apart is rather difficult. If keepers want to correctly distinguish male from female oscar fish, they need to do more comparative study, become familiar with the differences between the two, and identify the sex correctly. Let us take a look together below!
How to tell male and female oscar fish apart
In terms of overall appearance, the head region of the male oscar fish is relatively high and thick, the dorsal fin and anal fin are more pointed and elongated, and the patches and stripes on the body are more numerous and more vivid. The female fish has a sturdier body, a smaller anal fin, and its body color is not as bright as that of the male. When the oscar fish reaches sexual maturity, the body of the female oscar fish is, on the whole, sturdier than that of the male oscar fish.
Differences between male and female oscar fish
1. Body shape: The male oscar fish has a strong, robust build. The female oscar fish is relatively sturdier.
2. Head: The male oscar fish develops a slight hump on the head, while the female oscar fish generally does not.
3. Upper and lower fins: The male oscar fish's are relatively pointed, while the female oscar fish's are relatively rounded. A pregnant female oscar fish has a slightly bulging belly.
4. Anal fin: The female oscar fish's is relatively small.
5. Color: The male oscar fish has vivid coloration, the yellow at the gill cover shines brightly, and the tail spots are bright. The female oscar fish's color is relatively dull.
How should oscar fish be kept
1. Density: The oscar fish has a relatively high oxygen consumption, so in general aquarium keeping, sparse stocking is preferable. In an aquarium of 120x50x50 cm, when the oscar fish has a body length of 6 cm, about 40 fish can be stocked; at a body length of 10 cm, about 20 fish can be stocked; at a body length of 18 cm, 4 to 6 fish can be stocked; and at a body length of 25 cm or more, 2 fish can be stocked.
2. Water temperature: The suitable water temperature for the oscar fish's life is 22 to 28°C, and the most suitable water temperature is 24 to 26°C. Below 18°C, the oscar fish will die; above 30°C, the oscar fish also lives poorly or even dies.
3. Water quality: Although the oscar fish is not very strict about water quality, fresh water can greatly promote the fish's growth rate. Every night, change 1/2 to 3/4 of the water in the aquarium. After one month, an oscar fish with a body length of 2 cm can reach about 7 cm. Each time new water is added, it can stimulate the fish's metabolism and enhance its appetite, so the growth rate speeds up. Generally during keeping, change 1/2 of the water every day and do a complete water change once a week. While changing the water, soak the oscar fish in a 0.5% baking soda solution for 10 minutes to promote metabolism, enhance appetite, and speed up the growth rate.
4. Food: The oscar fish is omnivorous with a tendency toward animal food, and it likes to eat live bait such as small fish, small shrimp, and tubifex worms. For convenience in artificial keeping, compound pellet feed is often used. The oscar fish is very greedy and eats as it is fed, eating as much as it is given, so feeding must be done on a fixed schedule and in fixed amounts. Control the daily feeding amount at about 10% of the fish's body weight, divided into two feedings, one in the morning and one in the evening. The oscar fish grows relatively fast, reaching sexual maturity in 8 to 12 months, and its body length can reach 20 to 30 cm. 5. Light: The oscar fish needs to receive appropriate light every day. In a day, it must receive at least 2 hours of light. Only in this way can the normal life of the oscar fish be guaranteed and its body color be made more vivid. At the same time, through light, the water quality is transformed, so that the keeping water is not easily spoiled.
