What to Do If Your Oscar Fish Won't Eat

Oscar fish have high ornamental value, do not demand much from their living environment, and are extremely adaptable. It is precisely because oscar fish are not difficult to keep and breed that they receive more attention and appreciation. If your oscar fish stop eating during the keeping process, what should you do, and how should you change this behavior?

Newly Added to the Tank

Although oscar fish are bold and domineering, when newly added to a tank they always feel a sense of unfamiliarity and constraint, just like when you visit a stranger's home. They need a period to adapt, and once they have adapted fairly well, they will gradually begin to eat. At this point you only need to keep the water temperature at 26-28°C and not disturb them frequently. 1. Turn on the light, increase oxygen supply, and if the water is not clean, change it to keep the water fresh. Oscar fish consume a relatively large amount of oxygen, so fewer fish in a larger tank is a good choice. 2. Feed shrimp meat to stimulate their appetite, and once they start eating, feed small fish. If that doesn't work, find them a companion; when it sees other fish eating, it will eat too, since food in someone else's bowl always seems to taste a little better.

Overeating

There is no good solution for this either; you just have to let it go hungry. When feeding fish, it is hard to avoid overfeeding. A common situation is that you feed them, someone else doesn't know and feeds them again, and since oscar fish are gluttonous, they will eat as much as you give them, and even when they can't swallow any more, they still try to gulp it down, which is quite exasperating. At this point, quickly remove the remaining fish food, as too much can cause them to overeat and die. An oscar fish that does this to itself should just be left hungry for 2-3 days; this way it seems to recover on its own. However, the most fundamental solution is still to control the feeding amount properly, as binge eating is not good.

Injured in Fights

This situation is hard to avoid when keeping oscar fish. Oscar fish generally have no fondness for newcomers to the tank, and bullying is inevitable. However, when they encounter one stronger than themselves, they can only be injured. Of course, fish of the same species will also fight. If the injuries are severe, the oscar fish will be unable to eat. In this case, stop feeding, isolate them, and if there is infection, administer medication.

Illness

The common diseases of oscar fish are fin rot and tail rot, which generally do not affect eating. If they have internal parasites, enteritis, or similar conditions, then they can no longer be fed. Fasting and treatment are the only ways to possibly save their lives.

Poor Water Quality

Poor water quality can also cause loss of appetite in oscar fish. If there is too much feces and leftover food accumulated at the bottom of your tank, and the water looks unclear and foggy, and if this persists for a long time, the oscar fish will become very inactive, listless, reluctant to swim, and unwilling to eat. At this point, you need to change the water immediately. Maintaining good water quality is fundamental.
