How to tell male and female alligator snapping turtles apart?

The alligator snapping turtle is the oldest surviving reptile, also known as the snapping turtle, giant alligator turtle, alligator shell turtle, and is called the king of freshwater animals. It is divided into two main types: the alligator snapping turtle and the common snapping turtle. The alligator snapping turtle is also called the true alligator turtle, and the common snapping turtle is also called the false alligator turtle. They are large in size and highly aggressive, with few natural enemies apart from alligators. Let us now take a look at how to tell male and female alligator snapping turtles apart!

How to tell male and female alligator snapping turtles apart?

1. First, look at the position of the alligator snapping turtle's cloaca. The male's is closer to the tail end, while the female's is closer to the plastron.

2. Second, look at the shape of the alligator snapping turtle's cloaca. The male's opening is elongated, while the female's opening is round.

3. Third, look at the alligator snapping turtle's tail. The male's tail is relatively thick and large, while the female's tail is relatively short and thin.

4. Finally, look at the alligator snapping turtle's plastron. The male has an obvious depression in this area, while the female's appears relatively flat.

What value do alligator snapping turtles have?

1. Economic value: The alligator snapping turtle is a rare treasure among turtles, which is why it is also called the meat turtle. It is famous worldwide for its strong body and abundant meat, and is characterized by a high meat yield, rich nutrition, fast growth, and high economic value. Its meat yield ranks first among turtles, and the meat is fine, tender, aromatic, and delicious with no unpleasant odor.

2. Medicinal value: The alligator snapping turtle has a very obvious nourishing effect. It can help support yang, replenish yin blood, and boost vital essence. It is markedly effective for those with deficient essence and blood after a long illness, fatigue and weakness, prolonged paralysis and frailty, and consumptive cough. It is also suitable for postpartum nourishment, and for people with anemia, insomnia, and mental decline.

3. Ornamental value: The alligator snapping turtle has very high ornamental value. Looking at the ordinary hatchlings sold on the market, the Florida alligator snapping turtle currently has the highest price, followed by the true alligator snapping turtle, the hybrid Florida alligator snapping turtle, and the North American alligator snapping turtle, while hatchlings from Central and South America are even more expensive because few are imported.

How should alligator snapping turtles be raised properly?

1. Water depth: Alligator snapping turtles live in water. Generally, the water depth only needs to be slightly higher than the turtle's shell. It does not need to be too deep, and at most should not exceed 2 times the height of the turtle's shell. It is best to provide a rock that rises above the water surface so the turtle can climb up to bask its shell.

2. Light: Alligator snapping turtles need sunlight. If kept completely indoors, they should be sunned frequently, for more than ten minutes each day. It is recommended to keep them in a southeast-facing place where they can get about 1 to 2 hours of sunlight and provide shade conditions to prevent heatstroke.

3. Tank bottom: The bottom of the alligator snapping turtle's tank can be covered with some small stones or large cobblestones, but if covered, water changes become very troublesome. Beginners are advised to use a bare tank, meaning nothing is laid down, and at the same time do not put aquatic plants in the water.

4. Water quality: Alligator snapping turtles eat a lot and produce a lot of waste. Even when fed green feed, they pollute the water fairly quickly, and more harmful substances are easily produced in the water. Spraying and applying photosynthetic bacteria at the bottom can effectively improve water quality and reduce harmful substances.

5. Water changes: In an alligator snapping turtle breeding tank with a water depth of 20 cm, the water can be changed once a day; at 30 cm, once every 2 days. Never go many days without changing the water, and do not let the water give off a foul odor. Every 7 to 10 days, quicklime can be sprayed once, and be careful to apply it alternately with photosynthetic bacteria.

6. Water temperature: When alligator snapping turtles grow long-term at a water temperature of 18 to 20°C, their growth rate is several times slower than at the optimal growth water temperature of 30 to 31°C. If a turtle pond that is having its water changed or is exposed to the outside suddenly encounters heavy rain or a sudden temperature change, timely precautions should be taken to avoid a water temperature fluctuation greater than 2°C.

7. Feed: Alligator snapping turtles are fairly omnivorous. Usually fish, loach, meat, and so on can all be fed. Formulated feed is generally 1.5 to 2.5% of the alligator snapping turtle's total body weight, and live feed is 5 to 10%. Feed 3 times a day at fixed times and in fixed amounts, and the range of food fed should be even and broad.
