Is a wasp building a nest at home an ill omen or a blessing?

Wasps are also known as hornets, horseflies and yellow jackets, and they usually build nests from softened, paper-pulp-like wood pulp, feeding on animal or plant food. The female wasp has a powerful long stinger, and when attacked or disturbed in an unfriendly way, they will swarm and attack, which can cause allergic reactions and toxic reactions in humans, and in severe cases can lead to death. Let's take a look below at whether a wasp building a nest at home is an ill omen or a blessing!

Is a wasp building a nest at home an ill omen or a blessing?

A wasp building a nest at home has nothing to do with fortune or misfortune. Although a wasp nest is harmless, it is best to get it out quickly while it is still small, otherwise it may accidentally injure someone later. In fact, wasps are quite strict in choosing a nesting site, generally choosing a place that is warm in winter and cool in summer with suitable temperature and humidity to build their nest, and it must have a source of clean water; secondly, it must have good concealment and safety; and finally, it requires a balanced distribution of food, otherwise when food becomes scarce in late summer there will be fights over food.

How to deal with a wasp sting?

1. After being stung by a wasp, the local skin will experience pain and itching. If the stinger has pierced into the skin, it must be removed.

2. Applying ice to the sting site can reduce pain and swelling. If the pain is severe, some pain-relieving medication can be taken.

3. If there is a spreading trend, there may be an allergic reaction, and some anti-allergy medication such as diphenhydramine or chlorpheniramine can be taken.

4. If difficulty breathing, coarsened breathing sounds, or wheezing sounds are found, send the person to the nearest hospital immediately for emergency treatment.

How is it best to destroy a wasp nest?

1. Fumigation with chemicals: Spring is an important period for wasps to build nests. At this time there are only a small number of overwintering wasps (each wasp builds 1 nest), and the nest is still relatively small. During the small-nest stage, it can be destroyed or removed, or cloth strips or towels soaked in pesticide can be hung on the small nest to fumigate and kill them.

2. Remove the nest at the right time: First spray the nest entrance and the wasps outside the nest with insecticide, then quickly cover the nest with a woven bag and tightly tie the bag opening, then remove the nest and put it together with the bag into water or pour gasoline on it and burn it. Nest removal should be done at night or on a rainy day.

3. High-pressure water gun: For nests built in high places that are difficult for people to reach, aim a high-pressure water gun at the nest and spray it to break the nest apart. You can also tie waste cotton soaked in fuel oil to one end of a long bamboo pole, light it, and extend it to the nest to burn and destroy the nest.

4. Burn the colony: In late autumn, when the temperature drops to 15 degrees, wasps begin to leave the nest and move to relatively warm places such as stone caves and grass piles to escape the cold, often gathering in groups of several hundred and huddling together to resist the cold. If a colony is found, it can be burned with fire.

5. Poison them at water sources: Wasps have the habit of collecting water for nest building. At places where wasps collect water, water pits can be dug manually or water containers can be placed with pesticide added. When the wasps drink the water, they will be poisoned to death. At the same time, however, attention must be paid to the safety of drinking water for people and livestock.

6. Lure and kill with corpses: Wasps not only like to eat bees, but also bite and eat the corpses of their own kind. Taking advantage of this habit, kill them with a wooden swatter when they pounce on the corpses. When swatting, you must aim accurately, otherwise if a large wasp is not hit on the first swat, it will turn back and sting people.

7. Kill by carrying poison: Gently press down a wasp with a small gauze net swatter, then apply highly toxic pesticide sugar liquid to its chest and abdomen, and then let it go. After these wasps return to the nest, other wasps will come to lick the toxic sugar liquid on their bodies, causing the entire nest to be poisoned.
