How to Identify PRRS in Pigs? A Detailed Guide to Practical Methods

Identification Methods in Sows
1. High abortion rates occur at all stages of gestation, and abortions may recur.
2. Stillbirths: Mummified fetuses and stillbirths may not appear.
3. Late-gestation sows: Sows more than 90 days into gestation have high fever, and there may be a higher mortality rate (induced abortion can partially reduce the mortality rate).
4. Mortality rate: When the disease strikes, the mortality rate among sows is higher, and can exceed 5%, reaching as high as 90%.
Identification Methods in Affected Pigs
1. Late-gestation sows or nursery pigs are the first to be affected, and cases where the entire herd is affected almost simultaneously also occur.
2. Body temperature rises to 40-42.5°C.
4. Accompanying symptoms: reluctance to stand, constipation, dark and scanty urine, and loss of appetite.
5. Encephalitis and pulmonary edema are the main causes of death.
6. Secondary infections are severe: mainly Streptococcus suis and Haemophilus parasuis.
