Can you really make money raising quail?

The quail is a relatively small member of the Phasianidae family. Although quail farming in China started relatively late, it has developed rapidly. At present, about 200 million quail are raised, making China the world's largest quail-raising country. Besides supplying high-end hotels and restaurants, quail are also processed into canned goods, preserved eggs and more, and are widely loved by consumers. Let's take a look below at whether raising quail can really make money!

Can you really make money raising quail?

Raising quail can make money. Objectively speaking, raising quail is more reliable than raising chickens, because quail lay eggs quickly, require less investment and carry lower risk. They can start laying eggs after 40 days of rearing, while chickens need 4 months of rearing before they lay. Chickens also take longer to raise, eat more and are prone to outbreaks of various diseases, whereas quail carry much less risk in this respect. In addition, quail have stronger disease resistance than chickens, ducks, geese and various other poultry. In terms of farming returns and market prospects, quail are also no slouch: the price of quail eggs is about 2 times that of chicken eggs, and demand and sales of quail meat are also rising rapidly.

How much does it cost to raise 10,000 quail?

1. Cage and housing cost: at a density of 60-70 birds per sq m (calculated on 6 tiers), raising 10,000 quail requires a floor area of 1.5*1.5*30=67.5 sq m and 30 sets of cages. At 250 yuan per set, the total is 0.75 ten thousand yuan.

2. Early-stage cost: quail chicks 0.6 yuan per bird + starter feed 1.7×0.35 yuan per bird + grower feed 1.6×0.75 yuan per bird + early-stage mortality 0.2 yuan per bird = 2.6 yuan per bird×10000 birds = 2.6 ten thousand yuan.

3. Laying-period cost: in one laying cycle (10-12 months), each quail uses 15 jin of feed. At 1.36 yuan per jin, that comes to 20.4 yuan per bird, plus 0.5 yuan per bird for medicine, (20.4+0.5)×10000×91%=19 ten thousand yuan.

4. Other costs: coal 1200 yuan + water 200 yuan + electricity 300 yuan + labor 2000 yuan = 0.37 ten thousand yuan. Raising 10,000 quail requires a total investment of 7500+2.6 ten thousand+19 ten thousand+0.37 ten thousand=22.72 ten thousand yuan.

What advantages does quail farming have?

1. Low input: quail farming does not require much land. Even large-scale quail farms occupy far less land and housing than other poultry, and the work does not require heavy physical labor. In addition, spending on disease prevention is also very low.

2. High output: quail mature in 40-50 days. Meat-type quail can reach 220 grams at 42 days of age while consuming only 700 grams of feed, and egg-type quail lay about 270 eggs a year, with a total weight of 3000 grams.

3. Fast turnover: quail have a short rearing cycle and require little capital input. The working capital tied up per bird does not exceed 1.6 yuan, so capital turnover is much faster than with other poultry.

4. Low risk: because quail farming is characterized by low input, high output and fast capital turnover, it is unlikely to cause economic losses, and overall there is no need to bear too much risk.
