Raising 30 Sows: Profit and Cost

Raising sows is very important to the pig farming industry, but raising sows is a technical job. With the right skills, profits are large and risks are small. Disease, production management skill level, breeding rate, farrowing rate and mortality rate are all risks. However, under normal management levels, raising sows will be more stable in returns than raising commercial pigs, and the income will be somewhat higher. Below let us take a look together at the profit and cost of raising 30 sows!

The Cost of Raising 30 Sows

1. The open (non-pregnant) period is about 2 months a year; calculated as 60 days, the average feed price is 1.4 yuan/jin, daily consumption is about 2.75 jin, and the feed cost is about 230 yuan.

2. Mid-to-late pregnancy is about 4 months a year; calculated as 120 days, the average feed price is 1.6 yuan/jin, daily consumption is about 4.75 jin, and the feed cost is about 900 yuan.

3. The lactation period is a little less than 2 months a year; calculated as 50 days, the average feed price is 1.7 yuan/jin, daily consumption is about 6.5 jin, and the feed cost is about 550 yuan.

4. The remaining 10 days are a flexible period, either in the open period, or in pregnancy, or in lactation; the average feed price is 1.56 yuan/jin, daily consumption is about 3 jin, and the feed cost is about 45 yuan.

5. Besides feed costs, sow raising also includes breeding fees, labor costs, epidemic prevention costs, depreciation of pig pens and farrowing rooms, and other expenses. The cost of breeding each sow is about 40 yuan per service, bred twice a year, so the cost is 80 yuan. The labor cost per sow is about 350 yuan/head, epidemic prevention cost is about 50 yuan/head, depreciation of pig pens and farrowing rooms is about 100 yuan/head, and other expenses including water, electricity and gas are about 50 yuan/head.

Summary: The feed cost of 1 sow for 1 year is 230 yuan + 900 yuan + 550 yuan + 45 yuan, and other costs are 80 yuan + 350 yuan + 50 yuan + 100 yuan, totaling 2305 yuan; for 30 sows that is 69150 yuan.

The Profit of Raising 30 Sows

1. Number of piglets born: Theoretically, one sow gives birth to 2.45 litters a year; calculated as 2 litters, with an average of 10 piglets per litter, calculated as 8, one sow produces 16 piglets a year, and 30 sows theoretically produce 480 piglets.

2. Suckling pig feed: Before a piglet reaches 30 jin it generally eats suckling pig feed (pelleted feed). The feed is calculated at 2 yuan per jin; basically one jin of feed produces one jin of gain, calculated at 1.2, so for a piglet to grow to 30 jin the cost is 30*1.2*2=72 yuan.

3. Compound feed: Theoretically, the average feed-to-meat ratio for fattening pigs is 3:1; growing from 30 jin to 200 jin uses 510 jin of feed, calculated as 600 jin, with feed at 1.1 yuan per jin, so eating 600 jin of feed costs 660 yuan.

4. Piglet profit: One piglet consumes 660 yuan + 72 yuan in feed per year. Fat pigs are calculated at 6.5 yuan per jin, so the profit of one piglet is 6.5 yuan*200 jin=1300 yuan - cost 732 yuan=568 yuan.

5. Total profit: 30 sows theoretically produce 480 piglets a year, 480*568 yuan=272640 yuan, minus the feeding cost of 30 sows of 69150 yuan, the total profit is 203490 yuan.

How Can You Raise Sows Well?

1. Clean environment: Pigs actually very much need a clean and tidy environment to grow better, so ensuring pigs have a clean environment is very important. Only with a tidy environment can pigs live more comfortably and thus grow more robust and meaty, which is what we want to see.

2. Feed allocation: The food given to pigs every day must also be arranged reasonably. For sows, if they are used to give birth to piglets, try not to feed them with feed; letting sows eat some grains and vegetables is best. Only this can ensure the pigs live healthily and also lay a good material foundation for nurturing the next generation.

3. Feeding method: Pigs are animals that can eat a lot, but they are not the kind that get fat and plump from just one meal; rather, they must be fed many times every day to grow better and fatter. The amount fed to pigs at each meal can be a little less, but the number of feedings can be more; eating less but more often can make sows grow better.

4. Health status: Just like people, sows also need a healthy body to nurture the next generation and let the next generation live better, so the sow's body also needs attention to exercise and cleaning. The place where pigs are raised needs ventilation and sunlight, and at the same time giving pigs a bath regularly is also necessary. If conditions allow, letting pigs run around and exercise is also very good.

5. Regular immunization: Whether for pigs meant to be eaten or pigs meant to produce piglets, vaccination is still very necessary. If vaccines are not injected, pigs can easily become infected with diseases, and after pigs are infected with diseases they spread easily, so many pigs will be infected. Therefore, doing a good job of vaccine protection is very important.

6. Crossbreeding: If you want the pig breed to be better, you must let the pigs crossbreed and pass the genes of good pigs to the next generation. Therefore, each batch of pigs raised must be screened, keeping the pigs that grow the easiest and are the most robust and least likely to get sick to nurture the next generation. After screening slowly in this way, the pig breed will become better.
