Razor Clam Farming Techniques

The razor clam belongs to the family Solenidae and is a mollusk among the shellfish. Its main production areas are the coastal regions of China and Japan, and it is one of the main shellfish species farmed in China. It is nutritious and delivers high market returns. We have all eaten it, but do you know how it is farmed? Let's take a look below at the razor clam farming techniques from Qinong Net.

1. Selection of the Farming Site

For farming, choose mid- and low-tide zones, in flat and slightly sloping tidal flats in inner bays or estuaries, where the tidal current must be smooth and the wind and waves calm; it can also be farmed in ponds. Razor clams grow 30 cm below the sand layer, so the requirements for the bottom substrate are relatively high. It is best to have a few cm of soft mud on the surface layer, a mud-sand mixture in the middle, and sand in the lowest layer. At the same time, its requirements for water quality are also extremely strict: the seawater specific gravity is required to be between 1.010-1.025, the suitable growth water temperature is 3-32°C, and it prefers weakly alkaline water, with a pH value of 8.01-8.15.

2. Preparation of the Razor Clam Field

After choosing a suitable farming site, the razor clam field must be prepared. First, the site must be harrowed and plowed, with deep plowing for areas with harder substrate, then harrowed fine and leveled, so that the soil becomes soft and suitable for the growth of razor clams. Before sowing the seedlings, it must first be disinfected and sterilized: sprinkle bleaching powder into the water body, drain the water after about 2-3 days, then use tea seed cake to eliminate small fish, shrimp and snails in the razor clam field, preventing them from eating the razor clam seedlings.

3. Sowing the Seedlings

The sowing time differs slightly between the south and the north. In the south, the temperature rises quickly, so sowing can be done before Qingming Festival in April, while in the north it must be done in late May. Before sowing, first fill a wooden bucket or plastic bucket with the seedlings, wash away the mud and sand with seawater, and then sowing can begin. Sowing can use two methods: throwing and broadcasting. Throwing is suitable for razor clam fields with a wide flat surface; gently pick up the razor clam seedlings and throw them onto the flat surface. When there is no wind, several people can throw in a crisscross pattern; when there is wind, throw along with the wind force. Broadcasting, on the other hand, is suitable for razor clam fields with a narrow flat surface; likewise, gently pick up the seedlings and broadcast them forcefully onto the flat surface.

4. Management of the Razor Clam Flat

After sowing the seedlings, strengthen the management of the razor clam flat and patrol frequently to check the growth rate and survival rate of the razor clam seedlings, promptly reseeding and taking corresponding measures. In summer, the temperature is high and hot, and the mud of the razor clam flat has poor heat dissipation, which is not conducive to the growth of razor clams, so at this time sand must be added to regulate the temperature and keep the razor clams in a suitable growth environment. The sand-adding time is before June, generally adding 1.5 tons of sand per mu; when adding sand, it must be spread evenly on the flat surface. In addition, during storms, pay attention to the accumulation of soil and promptly move the silt to other areas. During the management of the razor clam flat, attention must also be paid to the prevention and control of natural disasters and biological pests, so as to avoid huge losses caused by them.

The above is the razor clam farming technique brought to you by Qinong Net. Generally, razor clams can be harvested and sold after 5-7 months of stocking, when they have grown to about 5 cm. It has the characteristics of low farming cost, short growth cycle, high yield and good returns, and is suitable for farming in China's coastal areas.
