How to Manage Quail in Winter

Quail is currently a relatively popular wild specialty poultry breeding project, but most quail farming is currently mainly for egg production, because quail eggs appear more frequently in our lives. In fact, quail meat is even more tender and delicious. Today, QinNongNet would like to share with everyone how to manage quail in winter so they can still grow, reproduce, and lay eggs normally.

1. Nutritional Matching

Due to the relatively large temperature changes in winter, quail that originally had a certain degree of free activity and could hunt for food on their own cannot move around freely, and can only obtain the nutrients they need through artificial feeding. Therefore, there will be certain changes in the feed formula in winter. After all, some nutritional components need to be added so that quail can maintain nutritional balance. Usually we use 15 percent soybean meal, 50 percent corn, 15 percent concentrated feed, 15 percent fish meal, and 5 percent of some feed containing other nutrients, mix them evenly, and feed two to three times a day.

2. Temperature Management

The temperature changes greatly in winter, and temperature has a great impact on the egg production rate of quail, the living and growth conditions of quail, and the quality of eggs, so in winter we need to carry out heat preservation measures. The optimal temperature suitable for quail production is around 20 to 25 degrees, while in most areas of our country the winter temperature is around 4 to 5 degrees or even lower, so heat preservation needs to be carried out through various methods, such as switching to thermal insulation materials, installing heating equipment, using greenhouse farming, and increasing breeding density. These can all regulate temperature.

3. Lighting Management

The lighting time in winter is relatively short, and even sunny days are relatively few. Basically, it is cloudy, but the normal growth of quail has requirements for light. At least the daily lighting time must be guaranteed to be around 15 hours, so we can only use fluorescent lamps for lighting. This can not only increase the length of lighting, but also provide a certain degree of heat preservation to some extent, achieving two goals at once.

4. Sanitation Management

Many people think that once winter arrives, they can relax the management of the sanitary environment of the breeding farm. First, we need to clean up the manure in the breeding farm and quail house from time to time. Second, although the activity of many bacteria becomes weaker in winter, disinfection and sterilization still need to be carried out. Finally, although winter is cold, attention should still be paid to opening windows for ventilation.

5. Disease Prevention and Control

Due to the large temperature differences in winter, during management attention should be paid to giving quail physical examinations from time to time to prevent colds or other diseases. During periods of sudden temperature changes, vaccine injections should be carried out to avoid the occurrence of diseases. Finally, in winter, rodent damage should still be prevented, and after an outbreak is discovered, sick quail should be isolated and treated promptly.
