The Correct Method and Precautions for Beak Trimming in Chicks
In chicken farming, due to improper rearing environment and management, chicks may develop the vice of feather pecking and vent pecking. This vice can affect the entire flock, causing restlessness and unease among the chickens. To prevent this from happening, chicken farms often carry out beak trimming. Beak-trimmed chicks can not only effectively prevent the occurrence of pecking vices, but also improve feed utilization and reduce farming costs. So how should beak trimming be done? What should be noted after beak trimming? Let's take a look.

1. Preparation for Beak Trimming
Before beak trimming, first check the growth condition of the flock. Generally, beak trimming is performed on chicks just after hatching or one week later, and no later than two weeks, because by then the chicks' bodies are already mature and they are more sensitive to pain. If the time period is exceeded, bleeding and wound infection may occur. Before beak trimming, also observe the health of the flock. Sick and weak chickens should be picked out in time and raised separately, and beak trimming should be carried out after they recover their health; otherwise, their weaker constitution combined with beak trimming may cause death.
2. Beak Trimming Methods
Nowadays there are professional beak trimmers for beak trimming. An electric soldering iron and an iron sheet heated until red can also be used for cauterization. Using a beak trimmer is more convenient to operate. Hold the chicken with one hand, and with the index finger of the other hand press the chick's throat so that its tongue retracts, to avoid injuring the tongue during beak trimming. Then insert the chick's beak into the hole of the beak trimmer, heat the hot blade, and cut from top to bottom. The cut location is: for the upper beak, half the distance from the beak tip to the nostril; for the lower beak, one third of the distance from the beak tip to the nostril. After cutting, cauterize for 2-3 seconds to stop the bleeding. Remember not to cauterize for too long, to avoid adverse reactions in the chicks. If there is no professional beak trimmer, an electric soldering iron and an iron sheet can be used. Likewise, punch a small hole in the iron sheet to secure the chicken's beak, then repeat the same operation with the electric soldering iron, or scissors can be used to cut directly, but iron cauterization must be carried out to stop the bleeding.
3. Precautions for Beak Trimming
After beak trimming, chicks will experience a series of stress reactions, such as bleeding, decreased immunity, and infection with diseases, which in severe cases can lead to death, so management after beak trimming is extremely important. First, no vaccines can be administered within two days of beak trimming. Chicks will already have stress reactions after vaccination, and if the two are combined, the mortality rate is extremely high. Before and after beak trimming, add multiple vitamins to the feed and drinking water to reduce the occurrence of stress reactions in beak-trimmed chicks, or to reduce the impact of stress reactions on the chicks. In addition, the timing of beak trimming should also be chosen appropriately. It is recommended to carry it out on a clear morning, which can reduce bleeding, stress, and bacterial infection. For several days before and after beak trimming, nipple-type automatic drinkers should be used to reduce stress reactions.
