What are the precautions for sturgeon farming?
Sturgeon is a fish belonging to the order Acipenseriformes, and China is the country with the widest distribution, the most species and the richest resources of sturgeon. But the sturgeon mentioned here is not the nationally protected Chinese sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis), just ordinary common sturgeon. Adult sturgeon are very large, generally reaching a body weight of 68-250kg. Artificial farming areas are now becoming wider and wider, so what should be noted when farming sturgeon? Let's take a look below!

1. Pond conditions
Because adult sturgeon are very large, the pond area required for farming sturgeon also needs to be relatively large; the pond needs deeper water, a sufficient water source, and clean, clear, unpolluted water quality. The pond should be kept as far as possible from residential areas, factories, main traffic roads and other noisy places. But transportation convenience and convenient communication must also be ensured. Generally the pond area is determined by the farming quantity, but it is usually around 5-10 mu, with the water level generally around 3 m, ensuring stable water quality, a relatively high dissolved oxygen value in the water, and setting up independent water inlets and aeration equipment to prevent oxygen deficiency in the pond.
2. Pond clearing and disinfection
15 days before releasing the fry, fill the pond with about 20cm of water, mix quicklime with water and splash it over the whole pond to thoroughly disinfect the pond and eliminate toxic substances in the water. Then soak the pond for about three days, drain the pond water, then use water to soak the pond bottom, and filter at the water inlet and outlet with mesh silk. Then use tea seed cake to clear and disinfect the pond. Before disinfection, first crush the tea seed cake and soak it in water for 24 hours, then splash it over the whole pond. This not only kills the fish and shrimp in the pond, but the remaining tea seed cake can also be used as fertilizer. Ten days before releasing the fry, deepen the pond water to about 80 cm and disinfect with a chlorine-containing disinfectant.
3. Fry stocking
When stocking fry, choose disease-free, healthy sturgeon fry, preferably over 20cm, and the farming density is generally 500 fish per mu. When stocking, consider whether the water temperature is suitable, and also consider the time for adult sturgeon to reach market. If the fry need to be transported, feeding of the fry should be stopped about 2 days before transport. Before releasing the fry, first test the water by placing sturgeon fry of the same size in a net cage, then observe their growth and activity; if there are no abnormalities, they can be stocked. However, the fry need to be placed in bags and then put into the pond to let them adapt to the pond water temperature.
4. Daily management
Frequently observe the growth of the sturgeon in the pond, at least three times a day in the morning, noon and evening, with special attention to inspections at night and early morning, paying attention to the activity of each fish to prevent oxygen deficiency. In summer, because it is the rainy season and the air pressure is relatively low, patrols of the pond should be strengthened, and any problems found should be dealt with promptly. For example, for oxygen deficiency, use an aerator to aerate the pond, or add and change new water, to prevent the phenomenon of pond turnover. Regularly check the growth and health of the sturgeon, and appropriately adjust the feeding amount and density.
The above are the precautions to note when farming sturgeon. Farming sturgeon requires a certain amount of financial resources and patience, and the economic value of sturgeon is relatively high. The methods for farming sturgeon are also relatively simple, but attention should be paid to the occurrence of pests and diseases; sturgeon diseases are relatively difficult to detect, so I hope everyone can have a correct management method.
