How to improve the survival rate of newborn piglets

Because newborn piglets are extremely fragile and very prone to dying, the survival rate of newborn piglets is a cause of worry for many breeders. So what measures in the early stage can effectively improve the survival rate? Below, QinNong Net takes everyone to learn about it, so that you can master some useful assistive methods.

1. Newborn piglet handling at birth

A newborn piglet's whole body is covered with a layer of mucus when it is just born, and this must be wiped clean, especially the mouth and nose area, otherwise it can easily lead to suffocation and death of the piglet. For the umbilical cord, it is best not to use scissors or the like, as this can easily cause infection. Second, do not pile the piglets up, as this can easily press on some piglets; just lay the piglets flat right next to each other, which helps with keeping warm. Piglets love to bite things, which is their nursing instinct, so after they grow for a period of time, their tails and teeth need to be removed for them, to avoid biting each other in the early stage and causing infection and disease.

2. Feeding management

After wiping the piglets dry and keeping them dry, immediately place them at the sow's nursing spot to let them take in nutrients; the earlier the better, and be sure the piglets get enough of their first colostrum. From the second day after birth, it is necessary to artificially feed some items rich in iron and selenium, which are present in very small amounts in sow's milk but are indispensable elements for piglets. Starting to feed food 10 days after birth can effectively improve the piglets' adaptability, and around 20 days, gradually reduce the amount of milk fed. The food fed in the early stage must be a paste-like substance, as only this is beneficial for the piglets' absorption.

3. Temperature control

For the first 10 days after birth, piglets need the temperature kept a bit higher, especially at birth, when the temperature must be even higher, so that the piglets do not feel too great a difference between the temperature inside the womb and the outside environment. Second, the environment needs a certain humidity; being too dry will cause piglets to have difficulty breathing. For the first 10 days, keep the temperature at around 35°C, and from 10-20 days it can be lowered to 30°C. After 20 days, it is enough just to keep the temperature relatively warm.

4. Sanitation and disease management

This is a relatively important issue. Because newborn piglets have poor resistance, they are prone to infection by many diseases. So first of all, the sanitation of the piglets' living environment must be clean. In the early stage, piglets are most prone to viral diarrhea, and this disease has an incidence rate of 30% and a mortality rate of 70%. It is recommended to inject iron dextran and iron-cobalt compound within 3-5 days of birth for prevention. After 10 days, all vaccines in all respects must be fully injected.

When patrolling the pig pen in daily life, everyone must pay attention to the sow's condition; sows sometimes bite piglets to death or crush piglets to death, and everyone must pay close attention to this. As long as piglets are cared for well in the early stage, it is basically very difficult for anything to go wrong later. For the sake of your own profits, you can only work harder in the early stage.
