Agave Cultivation Techniques

Agave, also known as dragon-tongue palm and sisal hemp. It belongs to the Agavaceae family, genus Agave. Because its leaves are firm and upright and it stays evergreen year-round, it is one of the important materials for landscaping in the south. In the Yangtze River basin and areas to the north, it is often grown in pots in greenhouses, used to decorate courtyards and halls, adding a tropical flavor.

Morphological Characteristics

Perennial evergreen large herbaceous plant, succulent, with a very short stem. Leaves clustered, thick and fleshy, spoon-shaped lanceolate, grayish green, covered with white powder, with a hard spiny tip at the apex and hooked spines along the margins. The flower scape is stout, with a terminal panicle. Flowers pale yellow-green. Capsule elliptical or spherical.

Common varieties include: Agave americana var. marginata, Agave americana var. mediopicta, Agave americana var. marginata-alba, green-edged agave, and Agave angustifolia, among others.

Ecological Habits

Native to Mexico. It is robust, likes sunlight, and is not tolerant of shade. Slightly cold-tolerant; it can be grown in the open at temperatures above 5C. Mature agave plants suffer only mild frost damage to the leaves at a low temperature of -5C; at -13C the aboveground parts freeze and rot, but the underground stem does not die and can sprout and grow leaves normally the following year. It has strong drought tolerance. It prefers well-drained, fertile and moist sandy loam. In its place of origin it generally takes several decades to bloom, and after blooming the mother plant dies; in the Nanjing area it does not bloom. Cross-pollination is required for it to set seed.

Propagation Methods

Division propagation is commonly used. In spring from March to April, dig up the suckers sprouting at the root crown with roots and plant them separately. If the root suckers have no root system, they can be inserted into sandy soil to root before planting. Alternatively, in spring when repotting or transplanting, cut off a section of root stock with 4 to 6 buds and pot it.

Cultivation Techniques

Agave cultivation and management are relatively simple. Except in tropical and subtropical regions, potted plants in other regions should be placed in a low-temperature greenhouse for protection over winter. After Qingming the following year, move them outdoors. For variegated-leaf varieties, proper shading is needed in summer. During the growing season, keep the potting soil moist. When watering, do not splash water on the leaves to prevent brown spot disease. As new leaves grow, promptly remove the yellowed and withered old leaves at the bottom.
