How to make an asparagus fern bonsai

The asparagus fern (Asparagus setaceus) has an elegant posture, slender and supple branches, distinct layers, and an orderly arrangement of heights; its cloud-like fronds are elegant and unique, making it a favorite among people. If the asparagus fern is designed and composed into a bonsai and displayed on a balcony or indoors, it appears even more beautiful and serene, adding much pleasure to life. The key points for making an asparagus fern bonsai are introduced below.

Selection of bonsai materials

1. Select an irregular-shaped white marble shallow pot 56cm long and its matching stand.

2. Select two well-growing asparagus ferns just over 10cm tall, and one asparagus fern about 20cm tall.

3. Select two pieces of landscape stone only about 10cm tall.

4. Select several horse and sheep figurine accessories of varying sizes.

5. An appropriate amount of potting soil and green moss.

Shaping the asparagus fern bonsai

Take the 3 asparagus ferns out of their cultivation clay pots or small plastic pots, and remove half of the old potting soil. First spread a thin layer of potting soil over the surface of the white marble shallow pot, plant the tallest asparagus fern at the right end of the pot with its curved branches and leaves pointing to the left, plant the second-tallest asparagus fern not far to the left of the first asparagus fern and appropriately near the back rim of the pot, then plant the shortest asparagus fern at the boundary between the 1/3 and 2/3 points along the pot's length, with its curved branches and leaves also pointing to the left, so as to achieve a coordinated and unified orientation for the three asparagus ferns.

Then look from afar and observe up close, adjusting the position of the asparagus ferns in the pot until it achieves a natural and graceful effect.

Embellishing the asparagus fern bonsai

The branches of the asparagus fern are slender and curved, which is an expression of softness; in addition, the surrounding edges of the irregular white marble pot are also curved, so this scene has more than enough softness but insufficient masculine strength. A superior scene must combine hardness and softness. Place two upright pieces of landscape stone at an appropriate position toward the right rear on the pot surface; the landscape stone is hard in texture with straight left and right side lines, which is an expression of hardness. On the potting soil surface of the pot, spread a layer of green moss to achieve a greening artistic effect.

Finally, spray the asparagus ferns and green moss with clean water, and make the potting soil moist.
