What is the flower language of the canna lily?

The canna lily is also called red canna, small-flowered canna, and small banana, and its flower language is “a solid future.” According to Buddhist tradition, the canna lily was transformed from blood that flowed from the Buddha's toe. It is a large flower, and the canna lily blooming in the sunlight and scorching weather makes people feel its strong will to exist.

The flower language of the canna lily: a solid future。

It is said that long ago, on a night with a bright moon and clear breeze, several fairies in the heavenly court who could not endure loneliness sneaked out of the palace and peered at the mortal world. When their gaze moved toward the Changtan area, they could not help exclaiming in unison: What beautiful mountains and waters! They forgot the rules of heaven, developed worldly desires, and decided to go to the mortal world to play for a while.

The fairies descended on their clouds and landed right by the Changtan River. Each broke off a branch and shook it into an oar; each picked a leaf and breathed on it to make a boat. Leisurely and carefree, they rowed and played, singing and laughing, attracting the aquatic creatures in the pool to float up and watch, filled with envy. After midnight, they abandoned their boats and went ashore, following the mountain path into a narrow strip of sky, where they saw a flying waterfall pouring straight down, the water clear as a mirror, so beautiful beyond description. The fairies could not restrain themselves, took off their outer garments, and one by one jumped into the pool, chasing and splashing. As mountain birds chirped, day had already broken, and the fairies could no longer return to the heavenly court, so they turned into slender, graceful canna lilies, as if forever smiling to welcome visitors from all directions.

Varieties of canna lily

1. Red-flowered canna: flowers red, solitary. Bracts ovate, green, about 1.2 cm long. Sepals 3, lanceolate, about 1 cm long, green and sometimes tinged red. Corolla tube less than 1 cm long, corolla lobes lanceolate, 3-3.5 cm long, green or red. Outer staminodes 3-2, bright red. This species has smaller flowers and is mainly grown for its leaves.

2. Yellow-flowered canna: the corolla and staminodes are apricot yellow, unlike the typical species. Inflorescence solitary and loose, with few flowers, very few bracts; flowers large and soft, recurved downward, the lower part tubular, pale yellow, lip rounded.

3. Bicolor mandarin duck canna: introduced from South America, it is a rare and precious treasure among the Canna genus. It gets its name because on the same flowering stem it vies in splendor, producing flowers of two colors, bright red and five-star brilliant yellow. Even more ornamental is that the petals are half red and half yellow, with different shading on the same plant. Even more remarkable is that the red petals are dotted with bright yellow star specks, and the five-star yellow petals are adorned with bright red spots. The bicolor mandarin duck canna is short in stature, with densely growing leaf nodes and large, deep green leaves. It can bud and bloom once it has four leaves. It is an excellent choice for potted plants, and is also suitable for greening in urban areas, tourist attractions, residential areas, parks, and roadside plantings.
