Is the cactus poisonous?

The cactus is a perennial succulent herbaceous plant of the Cactaceae family. Many people like to grow a few pots of cacti at home; it is said that they can protect against radiation and also decorate the house. However, people often accidentally get pricked by cactus spines, and at that point the skin becomes red and swollen. Therefore, many people have begun to discuss whether cacti are poisonous. So, do you know whether cacti are poisonous?

Is the cactus poisonous?

Most cacti are not poisonous, but it cannot be said that none of them are poisonous, because there are too many varieties of cacti.

Are cactus spines poisonous?

The spines of most cacti contain toxins. After being pricked, a person's skin becomes red, swollen, and painful, with unbearable itching. After a cactus spine injury, you should thoroughly rinse the pricked area with tap water and soap, and use tweezers or a spine-removal tool to pull the spine out along the direction it entered. Be sure to remove it completely, and never break the spine off. If a spine is stuck in the gap under a fingernail, you can soak licorice in water until soft and apply it to the affected area; after 2-3 days, the spine will come out on its own.

After being pricked by a cactus, you should also pay attention to disinfection and anti-infection. After pulling out the spine, thoroughly disinfect with 3% hydrogen peroxide, and then apply a bandage after disinfection. If there are multiple puncture wounds, or the wound is contaminated and disinfection is not thorough, oral antibiotics may be taken to prevent infection.
