What to Do When Aspidistra Leaves Turn Yellow?

Aspidistra, also known as large-leaf evergreen, bamboo-leaf plate, nine-dragon plate, bamboo-node tendon-stretcher, etc., is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant with rhizomes in the genus Aspidistra of the family Liliaceae. It is native to the southern provinces and regions of China, and is now cultivated throughout China. It is widely used and has extremely high ornamental value. Let us take a look below at what to do when aspidistra leaves turn yellow!

Excessive Light

[Cause] Aspidistra dislikes direct sunlight. Even a short period of exposure to strong sunlight can cause leaf scorch and yellowing, reducing its ornamental value.

[Solution] Aspidistra can be grown in a bright indoor location year-round, but whether indoors or outdoors, it must not be placed in direct sunlight.

Insufficient Light

[Cause] Aspidistra is extremely shade-tolerant. Even in a dark room, it can remain ornamental for several months. However, prolonged periods in overly dark conditions are not conducive to the sprouting and growth of new leaves. If kept in a dark place with too little light for a long time, the leaves of aspidistra will turn yellow.

[Solution] If aspidistra is placed in a dark room, it is best to move it to a location with bright light for a period of time at regular intervals to promote growth and maintain its ornamental value. This is especially important during the period from new leaf sprouting to new leaf maturity, when it must not be placed in an overly dark location.

Overwatering

[Cause] Overwatering is also one of the reasons for yellowing leaves in aspidistra. Aspidistra likes water and has a certain tolerance; even after several days of drought, it will not die. However, if watered too much, root respiration will be affected, causing the leaves to turn yellow.

[Solution] Water aspidistra by the principle of watering when dry and stopping when wet. Do not overwater, but do not underwater either. During the growing period, it needs sufficient moisture.

Excessive Fertilizer Concentration

[Cause] Aspidistra does not have a particularly high demand for fertilizer. It is best to apply light fertilizer each time. If too much fertilizer is applied, it will burn the roots, disrupt the growth of aspidistra, and cause the leaves to turn yellow due to fertilizer damage.

[Solution] Apply 1-2 times a month with dilute liquid fertilizer to promote the sprouting of new leaves and healthy growth, ensuring the leaves remain fresh and bright. Do not apply too much fertilizer.

Pest Infestation

[Cause] Aspidistra kept indoors is highly prone to red spider mites. The appearance of pests is also a cause of yellowing leaves in aspidistra.

[Solution] Frequently check both sides of the leaves and promptly spray dicofol, hexythiazox, or similar for control.
