How to grow potted String of Pearls?

String of Pearls, also known as String of Beads, Jade Beads, Green Bell, and so on, is a succulent plant in the genus Senecio of the Asteraceae family. Like spider plants and other plants, its stems grow downward, forming numerous trailing vines, with round, plump, heart-shaped leaves that sway in the wind like strings of wind chimes. The flowering period is generally from December of the current year to January of the following year. Now let us take a look at how to grow potted String of Pearls!

Growth habits of String of Pearls

String of Pearls prefers a warm, humid, semi-shaded environment. It is highly adaptable and relatively tolerant of drought and cold. It likes soil rich in organic matter that is loose and fertile. It grows best in a warm environment with high air humidity and strong diffused light. It is not particular about soil and grows better in loose sandy loam. It generally grows well under moderate light conditions and also tolerates weak light. The optimum growth temperature is 15-25°C, and the overwintering temperature is 5°C.

Propagation methods of String of Pearls

1. Cuttings propagation: The vines of String of Pearls easily produce aerial roots. In spring and autumn, cut off a few segments, bury half of them in sand or loose soil, and keep them moist but not waterlogged; they will root quickly and be ready for planting.

2. Division propagation: Apart from winter, when the temperature is too low for division, this can be done in any other season. For plants that have been potted for 2-3 years, when repotting in spring, remove the old growing medium from the crowded clump of seedlings, divide it into two to several clumps, and pot each separately to form new plants.

3. Runner propagation: String of Pearls can also be propagated using the small plantlets on its runners. During the growing season, cut off the small plantlets on the runners and plant them in growing medium or water; after the small plantlets develop roots, transplant them into pots.

How to grow potted String of Pearls?

1. Soil: The root system of String of Pearls is very shallow, so it can be planted in a shallow pot. Generally, place a piece of tile over the drainage hole and spread a layer of coal cinders or coarse sand to increase aeration and drainage (especially when using commonly available plastic pots). For the soil, it is best to use leaf mold (fallen leaves of trees in autumn and winter mixed with a certain amount of crushed soil), mixed with a certain amount of sand (the ratio of soil to sand is about 1:3).

2. Watering: String of Pearls is prone to root rot in summer, so watering should not be too frequent; use a small spray bottle to water it.

3. Temperature: String of Pearls prefers warmth and humidity, is relatively cold-tolerant (when cultivated in the Jianghuai region it can tolerate a low temperature of 0°C), and is heat-tolerant. The optimum temperature is around 20-28°C. Growth is slow at both high and low temperatures, and it is almost dormant in a high-temperature environment.

4. Fertilizing: In spring and autumn, String of Pearls should be given "light fertilizer applied frequently." Spraying 1-3‰ nitrogen fertilizer and potassium dihydrogen phosphate on the leaves often helps make it more emerald green and plump and enhances its ornamental value.

5. Pests and diseases: String of Pearls rarely suffers from pests and diseases. Aphids in spring are one of them; remove them promptly or spray with 1500-times omethoate to kill them. Mites cause damage in summer and autumn; use 1000-times dicofol to kill them. Pay attention to ventilation and increase leaf surface humidity to reduce mite infestation.

Precautions for String of Pearls

1. Temperature control: String of Pearls likes a warm and humid climate and is not cold-tolerant. It grows fastest at 20-24°C and stops growing above 30°C, with leaves easily turning yellow and tips drying out. Therefore, in summer, prevent heat and lower the temperature with attention to ventilation; in winter, it should be cultivated in a greenhouse or indoors, with an overwintering temperature of 10°C being suitable, and not lower than 5°C.

2. Light regulation: When cultivating String of Pearls outdoors in summer, pay attention to shading so that the light is not too strong, otherwise sunburn is very likely to occur. When overwintering in a greenhouse or indoors in winter, pay attention to light exposure to prevent the leaf color from fading due to insufficient light.

3. Water and fertilizer regulation: During the peak growing seasons of spring and autumn, String of Pearls should be watered sufficiently, and the potting soil should be kept moist regularly. Also, frequently spray the branches and leaves with clean water close to room temperature to prevent tip drying, but do not let water accumulate. During the peak growing season, apply a dilute liquid fertilizer once every half month. In winter, water less and stop topdressing.
