The legend of wisteria flowers

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful girl who loved to wear purple clothes. Every day she sincerely prayed to the Yue Lao in heaven, hoping to meet someone who would cherish her. Finally one day, Yue Lao was moved by the girl's devotion and said to her in a dream: “When spring comes, in the locust tree forest on the back mountain, she will meet a man in white, and that will be the romance she has long awaited.” The girl silently remembered it and waited for a long time with eager anticipation.

When the warm spring days arrived and flowers bloomed, the infatuated girl went alone to the locust tree forest as promised, full of joy, nervously and excitedly waiting for the beautiful romance that belonged to her——the arrival of the man in white. But she waited until it was almost dark, and the man in white still had not appeared. In her nervousness and disappointment, she accidentally was bitten on the ankle by a snake in the grass. The girl could not walk, nor could she return home. Under the night sky, the girl began to feel afraid and panicked in her heart.

Just when the girl felt desperate and helpless, the man in white appeared. The girl cried out in surprise for help. The man in white came forward and used his mouth to suck out the poisoned blood from the snakebite on her ankle. From then on, the girl deeply fell in love with him. However, the man in white came from another place, and their marriage met with strong opposition from the villagers. But the girl had made up her mind and would not marry anyone but the man in white. In the end, the two lovers jumped off a cliff together to die for love.

Later, a locust tree grew on the edge of the cliff where they died for love, and a vine was unexpectedly wrapped around that tree, bearing clusters of flowers, blue amid the purple, brilliant as rosy clouds, extremely beautiful. Later generations called the flowers blooming on that vine wisteria flowers. Wisteria must wrap around a tree to grow and cannot survive alone, so some people said that the girl was the incarnation of the wisteria, and the locust tree was the incarnation of the man in white. Wisteria is born for affection and dies for love.
