Can spider plants be placed in the bedroom?

Spider plant, also known as ribbon plant, tree banana melon, inverted hanging orchid, etc., is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant of the genus Chlorophytum in the family Liliaceae. Its branches are slender and drooping. In summer or when temperatures are high in other seasons, it produces small white flowers. The flowers are concentrated at the ends of the drooping branches, with yellow stamens, and the small tender leaves inside are sometimes purple. It can be grown in pots for ornamental purposes. Let us take a look below at whether spider plants can be placed in the bedroom!

Can spider plants be placed in the bedroom?

Spider plants can be placed in the bedroom. According to scientific experiments, a potted plant consumes only 0.1 grams of carbon at night through respiration, so the total carbon dioxide released by ten potted plants is equivalent to the carbon dioxide produced by smoking one cigarette. Therefore, there is no need to worry about spider plants releasing carbon dioxide and affecting the human body; one potted plant simply does not have that much energy. For a relatively large space, producing this amount of gas is negligible, and the impact is also minimal. If you feel physically and mentally unwell indoors, it is mostly caused by poor indoor ventilation and stale air, and has little to do with keeping flowers. Opening windows more often and changing the air is more important.

What are the benefits of growing spider plants?

1. Beautifying the room: Spider plant is one of the best green plants for beautifying a room. Its leaves are slender and soft, and small plantlets grow from the leaf axils, hanging down from the edge of the pot, spreading and drooping like flowers. It is evergreen all year round and produces small white flowers in summer, with yellow stamens.

2. Freshening the air: Spider plant has the reputation of being a “green purifier”. It can carry out photosynthesis under weak light and absorb more than 80% of harmful gases indoors. Generally, keeping 1 to 2 pots of spider plants in a room can absorb almost all toxic gases in the air.

3. Improving feng shui: The placement of spider plants also has a certain significance in home feng shui layout. Arranging them according to the home's feng shui layout can add a positive energy field, enhance the family's fortune and wealth, and is beneficial to the health of the family's respiratory tract, lungs and spleen.

How to grow spider plants

1. Soil: Spider plants are suitable for loose, fertile sandy loam. The soil is required to contain humus and have strong permeability. Equal parts of leaf mold or peat soil, garden soil and river sand can be mixed with a small amount of base fertilizer as the growing medium.

2. Light: Spider plants like a semi-shady environment and are very sensitive to light. When exposed to direct sunlight in summer and autumn, the leaves will turn yellow and withered, and even the whole plant may die, so strong direct sunlight should be avoided. In winter, since the sunlight is not strong, it can appropriately receive some direct sunlight.

3. Temperature: Spider plants like a warm and humid climate and are not tolerant of severe cold or intense heat. The most suitable growing temperature is 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. In winter, the room temperature must not be lower than 5 degrees C. When it is below 5 to 7 degrees Celsius, attention must be paid to cold protection and warmth.

4. Watering: Spider plants like water, but they also have relatively strong drought resistance. From March to September, during the peak growth period, the water demand is relatively large, so watering and spraying should be done frequently. During the winter dormant period, watering can be done after the surface of the potting soil is dry to a depth of about one cm.

5. Fertilizing: Spider plants are relatively tolerant of fertilizer. Insufficient fertilizer and water can easily cause scorched tips and aging, yellowing leaves, and loss of ornamental value. For spider plants that have begun to grow plantlets, a nitrogen-based topdressing can be applied once every half month. If they are growing well, no fertilizer is also acceptable.

6. Repotting: Spider plants are generally repotted once every 2 to 3 years, but in specific care, in order to achieve lush stems and leaves, the soil can be changed and the pot replaced once every March. After repotting, attention should be paid to preparing new soil again.

7. Pruning: Spider plants should have yellow leaves cut off at any time. Once a year in March, the pot can be turned over, and old roots, rotten roots and excess fibrous roots can be cut off. In early to mid-May, some old leaves of spider plants can be cut off, which will encourage the spider plant to sprout more new leaves and small spider plants.
